The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution completed the semi-final stage of the debating league, part of the Youth for Civil Peace project funded by the National Endowment for Democracy in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, which aims to strengthen the concepts of civil peace among young people within Palestinian society.<\/span><\/div>\n
Two separate debates were held between the Gaza Strip universities that had qualified for the second stage of the debating league. The first was between the students of Gaza University and the Islamic University, in which the result went in favour of Gaza University by a point and a half over the Islamic University. A second debate was held between the students of Al-Quds Open University (Middle branch) and Al-Azhar University, which Al-Azhar University won unopposed after Al-Quds Open University (Middle branch) withdrew shortly before the debate began. Al-Azhar University and Gaza University thus qualified for the final stage of the inter-university debating league, on the basis of the results announced by the specialised adjudication panel in the field of adjudication and debating, made up of Sami Ghoneim, Wael Baalousha and project coordinator Hanan Al-Dalu. <\/span><\/div>\n
According to the Centre, the debating league aims to refine young people's capacities in the technique of debating and to help them raise their voices and convey them to officials in order to claim their rights using arguments, evidence and proof. The project's first stage provided the students with intensive training at the hands of a group of capable trainers on a number of topics, among them the concept and methods of debating and the concepts of citizenship and social accountability.<\/span><\/div>\n

The league covered eight universities in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, four of them in the Gaza Strip, with internal debates held within the universities, from which a team representing each participating university qualified for the semi-final stage of the debating league.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
