To mark the 67th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which falls on 10 December, the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution today held the festival \"Marking International Human Rights Day\" in the Shujaiya area of Gaza City, in partnership with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
The festival targeted the Shujaiya area as an example of the areas most exposed to human rights violations, particularly given the massacre it suffered, <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>added to Israel's long record of committing massacres, during its last assault on the Gaza Strip in 2014.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
The festival included an address by Iyad Abu Hjair, deputy director of the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution<\/a>, in which he explained that International Human Rights Day falls at a time when Palestinian children are subjected to grave violations of their rights and freedoms, foremost among them the right to housing: to this day many destroyed homes remain untouched by reconstruction. They are also denied travel, movement and medical treatment, and denied the chance to live in safety like the rest of the world's children. Despite these wounds they are marking this day and sending a message of peace and love to all the children of the world, affirming that they are steadfast on their land and sustained by hope for a better future.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
In his address, the deputy head of the Office of the High Commissioner in the occupied territories said that the children of the Shujaiya area have been through difficult circumstances but are today marking International Human Rights Day. He stressed that they have the right to live like the rest of the world's children and that the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights will always work to support and secure their rights.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
The<\/span><\/span>festival was attended by large numbers of children<\/span><\/span>, who were presented with many artistic works discussing and expressing their thoughts and feelings about the human rights situation, particularly what they went through during the last Israeli assault, through operetta performances and a silent expressive performance. The festival also carried a message of peace, dignity and love sent by the children of Palestine to the children of the world, as they released balloons bearing the rights they most wish for and are denied<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
