On Tuesday the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution held a dialogue meeting entitled \"The difficulties of rebuilding Gaza and citizens' expectations\", in partnership with the National Endowment for Democracy, in the hall of the Adam Hotel, as part of the activities and events of the Civil Peace project.<\/p>\n
Taking part in the meeting were Dr. Jawad Al-Agha, adviser to the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, Eng. Hikmat Al-Khairi, spokesperson for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Mr. Iyad Abu Hjair, director of the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, and a number of representatives of the displaced persons' association and civil society organisations.<\/p>\n
Mr. Iyad Abu Hjair, director of the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, opened the meeting by stressing the importance and priority of the reconstruction question, which weighs on the many whose homes were damaged during the last war on the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n
For his part, Dr. Jawad Al-Agha, adviser to the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, thanked the Conflict Resolution Center for its work in bringing the reality in which the official bodies responsible for reconstruction operate closer to the affected citizens and in clarifying the true picture of their work towards damaged homes and their owners. He said there is a crisis of trust between the citizen and the official, caused by the absence of accurate information reaching the citizen. He added that the total number of housing units that suffered full or partial damage during the war is 163,000, and that to this moment not all of them have been dealt with, particularly those completely destroyed, because the occupation obstructs the entry of the building materials required.<\/p>\n
Al-Agha stressed that those affected must form a pressure group on the official and competent bodies that obstruct the reconstruction process, and must also form a single unified body so that they can be dealt with directly, since, as he put it, the ministry cannot reach them all.<\/p>\n
For his part, Eng. Hikmat Khairi, spokesperson for the United Nations Development Programme, added <\/span>UNDP<\/span> that they are doing everything they can to survey the damage and the destroyed houses and to distribute the aid and funds that reach them in an orderly and fairer way, and that donations come in for health, reconstruction and education and are distributed directly to those affected. He noted that the survey and the distribution of funds, and indeed their arrival, take time, and that the occupation obstructs the arrival of much of the aid.<\/span><\/p>\n Among the interventions from those attending, participants thanked the Conflict Resolution Center for continuing to raise the reconstruction question they have long suffered from, and stressed that there is genuine chaos in the information and that much of it never reaches citizens, particularly those affected.
