The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, Hebron branch, held a training course in cooperation with Hebron University and Al-Quds Open University on the subject of debating. It reached 24 students from the various student bodies of Hebron University and Al-Quds Open University, twelve from each university, with the aim of refining young people's capacities in the technique of debating and helping them to raise their voices and convey them to officials in order to claim their rights using arguments and evidence.<\/p>\n
The course was run and supervised by the trainer Nadim Abu Khalaf, a certified senior trainer of trainers, the representative of the International Union of NLP Trainers in Palestine, and director general of the Experts Centre for Human Development. The course ran over five consecutive days, comprising 25 hours, and covered several topics on the concept of debating and its methods, the personal qualities of a debater, the concepts of citizenship and social accountability, and then the practical application of debating.<\/p>\n
The course was held at Hebron University and in the Centre's hall. At the start of the course the director of the Centre, lawyer Saad Shalaldeh, welcomed the students from both universities and thanked the managements of Al-Quds Open University and Hebron University, as well as welcoming the trainers and those present and thanking them for attending and taking part in the course. He then introduced the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, its activities, programmes and events and the projects it has carried out at local community level.<\/p>\n
Drawing on the Centre's vision and mission and in furtherance of its objectives regarding its concern for young people, he stressed that this course is concerned with developing young people's capacities and skills so that they become active members of society playing their part positively. He explained the mechanism and programme of the training course, its holding and its stages, and that it would be in three stages: the preliminary stage, the semi-final stage and the final stage. In the preliminary stage twelve students from each university take part, divided into four teams that debate one another on different topics; in the second stage the winning team at each of the two universities is determined and represents it in the semi-final stage, which consists of a single debate between the two universities' teams on student activities within the universities and how they strengthen national identity; and in the final stage of the debating league the final debate will be held between the winning team in Nablus and the winning team from Hebron in a public venue, attended by many political figures, representatives of civil society organisations, student bodies, youth groups and university students.<\/p>\n
A national topic will be put forward: \"Young people have a distinctive role in building the civil state\", and the winning team will be honoured. At the end of his address the director of the Centre wished everyone success in the debating league to be held in the coming days.<\/p>\n
The trainer Nadim Abu Khalaf used many varied training tools and media that enriched the training material, interspersed with many activities in which all the students from both universities took part. All the participating students expressed their pleasure at this course, which contributed to developing their skills and capacities in several areas and which will improve their performance in the future.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
