On Thursday the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, in partnership with the Tamer Institute for Community Education, held the closing ceremony of the Safe Educational Environment project, under the title \"Children are responsible\", in the hall of the Al-Mathaf Hotel. It was attended by Mr. Iyad Abu Hjair, director of the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, Mr. Ahmed Ashour, director of the Tamer Institute office in Gaza, project coordinator Ms. Abeer Zaher, Mr. Khalil Al-Halabi, head of the North Education Directorate, and a large number of parents, schools and children reached by the project.<\/p>\n
The ceremony was opened by Mr. Ahmed Ashour, director of the Tamer Institute office in Gaza, who spoke about the challenges the project faced, particularly during the assault on Gaza, and about their efforts with the Conflict Resolution Center to create and build a database for monitoring and documenting the violations children were subjected to, and how to train children to document violations themselves. He stressed that every task connected with the project was facilitated, particularly by UNRWA and the local committees, which contributed and cooperated to bring this project into being on the ground.<\/p>\n
In his address, the director of the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, Mr. Iyad Abu Hjair, said: \"A child who does not play, a child who does not learn, is a child who is dying.\" He praised the fortitude of the Palestinian people and the endurance of their children, who have lived through three wars, and pointed to Palestinian childhood as forever threatened by wars and conflicts and still paying the price of the injustice done to it. He said projects of this kind are a message from the children of Palestine to the whole world that they remain, despite the pain and despite the wounds. Abu Hjair thanked the Tamer Institute for providing a good environment for children in schools and libraries, for its tremendous efforts with children and for its excellent cooperation with the Conflict Resolution Center.<\/p>\n
Project coordinator Abeer Zaher reviewed the efforts and activities carried out in the Safe Educational Environment project, one of the projects most firmly based on the principle of participation and on strengthening awareness among children and their families. The project included workshops on how children can understand and grasp their rights and duties and then document them through several means they were trained in: workshops on children's rights and positive discipline for teachers; on giving parents guidance on how to deal with their children in times of danger; on encouraging parents to read and tell stories and how to read and narrate them to their children; on supporting student-led initiatives in schools; and on developing girls' talents in writing stories and poetry. There was also a summer camp to train children to write a film script, and training in expressive movement performance as a form of documentation, since body language is stronger in expression and in reaching the goal. Zaher pointed to training for grassroots organisations on follow-up and monitoring mechanisms, for which the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution was directly responsible through the database it prepared.<\/p>\n
For his part, Khalil Al-Halabi, head of the North Education Directorate, praised the role of the Conflict Resolution Center and the Tamer Institute and the efforts they made to bring this project to success, and thanked those working on it for replacing the method of punishment and violence with one of dialogue and safe democratic communication between pupil and teacher. He stressed that if there is a safe environment in schools, the school will also be an environment that motivates and encourages learning.<\/p>\n
On behalf of the local committees that took part in this project, their representative Munir Radwan stressed that the efforts made in it were tremendous, and recommended that the organisations that worked on the project take the lead in creative work so that projects of this kind can be sustained.<\/p>\n
The celebration included artistic items and expressive movement performances by the participating children, a reading of the story bulletin they had been trained on and an analysis of it afterwards, and the screening of a film prepared by the children the project reached, entitled \"We love life, as far as we are able\". Finally there was an open discussion on how to sustain these projects, which expressed the scale of the benefit the children gained through the project, particularly after the last assault, which violated their rights and their humanity.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
