The debate was attended by the projects director at the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, Abdel Moneim Al-Tahrawi, and a team opposing the proposition made up of the director of the public relations department at the Islamic University, Dr. Raed Salha, and Mr. Basel Abu Zueiter, director of the student fund at the Islamic University, while two enrolled students, Humam Ayyash and Ahmed Al-Afifi, represented the team supporting the proposition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A discussion took place between those supporting and those opposing the proposition, each side trying to establish the ideas it held. The opposing team stressed that the student fund provides facilities to students on limited incomes, to high achievers, to the children of martyrs and to grant holders. They added that the prices of university credit hours are fixed and do not change and are merciful compared with other universities, that quality and competition play an important part in the matter, and that there is full assurance that there is no rise in fees, only the natural requirements when compared with other universities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> The students, for their part, maintained that the price of credit hours at the Islamic University is higher than at other universities in the Gaza Strip, and that this level does not do justice to a large group of students at the university. They added that students crowd before the social committee to obtain assistance and loans. It is worth noting that the projects director at the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, Abdel Moneim Al-Tahrawi, stressed that this debate forms part of the project \"Palestine after five years of division\", and that debates of this kind are new and civilised, resolving university problems around one table with the two teams, for and against, on equal terms. He said the aim of these debates is to strengthen the language of dialogue between young students and their problems and the decision-makers at the university, and to create good relations between students and university officials.
