The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution took part with the Amal Coalition against Violence against Women in a mass march in front of the Legislative Council at the Unknown Soldier Square, with all the women's organisations taking part, on 10 December, to mark the 16 Days campaign against violence against women and International Human Rights Day.<\/p>\n
Raed Wishah, representing the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, explained that this march was held in defence of women's rights and set out from in front of the Legislative Council in Gaza towards the United Nations headquarters, to demand the right of the women of Palestine to freedom, dignity and international protection, since United Nations resolutions and international conventions provide for the protection of women in times of armed conflict, and to call for the activation of resolution 1325 on women, peace and security.<\/p>\n
Eng. Mariam Abu Al-Atta, coordinator of the Amal Coalition against Violence against Women, said that this was the third war on the Gaza Strip in five years, and that there is international silence towards what is happening in Gaza and towards the Israeli occupation's violations of the rights of civilians, women and children. The marchers headed to the headquarters of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to deliver a petition calling for United Nations resolutions to be activated to provide international protection and to hold the occupation to account for its repeated crimes against civilians in Palestine.<\/p>\n
Abu Al-Atta pointed out that the umbrella carried there is a symbolic idea for international protection, the international umbrella protecting the rights of human beings and civilians in the world. That umbrella was black because it has been unjust, especially towards the women of Palestine; the umbrella reflects the injustice women suffer in Palestine, and we call on the international community to be more effective towards Palestinian women.<\/p>\n

Dunya Al-Amal Ismail, director of the Creative Woman Association, stressed the need to raise voices loudly to confront violence against women in all its forms, whether internal or external, and to send a message to the world that Palestinian women are subjected to the violence of the occupation and to every form of violence, beginning with the violation of the right to life, to movement, to health, and to security, safety and stability. Ismail pointed out that these are the issues being conveyed to the whole world and to Palestinian decision-makers, so that they take up their role and their initiatives to protect Palestinian women subjected to violence.<\/p>\n
Umm Munther Abu Al-Kas, one of the women taking part in the march, explained that she has suffered destruction both materially and psychologically, and that during the last assault on the Gaza Strip she was displaced from her home and fled to the reception centres, and that the occupation drove them from their homes into shelters. She sent a message saying: \"We are steadfast on the land of Palestine, which will remain full of our young people and our children, and we will remain one hand. We also send our voice to the United Nations to stand beside us so that we may have our natural right to live in safety and to be provided with food, shelter and drink.\"<\/p>\n
The women raised banners demanding that the occupation be tried and held to account for its violations and crimes.<\/p>\n
