\nThe Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution and the secretariat of the student bodies at the Palestinian universities in Gaza celebrated the signing of a code of honour for working in a unified way, away from the political division. The celebration was attended by leaders of the national and Islamic factions, a number of mukhtars and public figures, representatives of the Palestinian universities and a large number of university students and young people, around a thousand people of both sexes, and was held in the hall of the Rashad Al-Shawa Cultural Centre.
\nMohammed Saleh, spokesperson for the secretariat of the student bodies, said: \"Students possess the effective power to influence and to press for a comprehensive reconciliation to be completed and to safeguard the Palestinian universities as national achievements.\"
\nHe added: \"The student movement has played an important part in the victories of the Palestinian people and is an immense energy for building societies on the basis of freedoms for the individual and for society.\"
\nHe stressed the need to widen the circle of agreement in order to reach national liberation and to reject fanaticism in all its forms, as a continuation of the efforts of the political parties and factions, civil society organisations and youth initiatives
\nHe explained that the secretariat of the student bodies in Gaza is committed to the code of honour for student work, saying it is \"a contractual agreement between the student bodies
\nand a commitment to abide by decisions\".
\nFor his part, Khaled Al-Batsh, spokesperson for the national and Islamic forces, considered the signing of the code a serious step towards keeping point-scoring and secondary problems away from the Palestinian universities, pointing to the need for university managements to abide by what it contains
\nHe noted that it is possible to close the file of the internal division and consign it to oblivion, adding that the signing of the code is a new beginning in ending it
\nHe pointed to the need for the student bodies to hold to their duties until reconciliation is completed and unity restored, and not to contribute to any breaches that would affect this code.
\nAl-Batsh praised the recent decisions of the Palestinian prime minister in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, which support ending the division and help resolve the matter in all its political and social forms
\nFor his part, Eng. Iyad Abu Hjair, deputy director general of the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, stressed the importance of the step achieved by the student movement and the signing of the code of honour, expressing his hope that it will help overturn the universities' decision to suspend student activities, taken to prevent friction between students as a result of the division.
\nHe said the signing of the code of honour between the student movement came through joint efforts over three years, in the hope that it will be a step towards holding elections at the universities and that the code will turn into a form of pressure to end the division in educational institutions.
\nThe code provides that the student bodies will take all the measures necessary to safeguard the national identity of the universities and not to give them a party character; that they will commit to removing all party displays, pictures, banners, posters and slogans, once central party activities end; that they will not call on any security body from outside the university to intervene in student affairs; that they will keep the universities clear of all party point-scoring and tugs of war; and that they will organise activities supporting the strengthening of national belonging.
\nThe document also provides that all the student bodies commit to peaceful intervention in all its forms, through negotiation and mediation or through protest and strike, in the event of any interference that strips away freedoms, together with the need for coordination and networking with civil society organisations and the universities in order to provide all the guarantees and create the conditions for holding elections in a friendly and democratic atmosphere and under the eye of the media, and to work to circulate the code to the universities of the West Bank so that it becomes a shared form of understanding between the student bodies at the country's universities.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
