A delegation from the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution and the campaign for securing Palestinian women's rights visited the president of the Supreme Sharia Court and president of the High Council of Sharia Judiciary, Sheikh Youssef Ideis, at the Council's premises in the city of Ramallah, to discuss the code of honour against the killing of women on grounds of family honour, prepared by the coalition, and to obtain the signature and support of the sharia judiciary and all the Council's staff.<\/p>\n
At the start of the meeting, the specialist at the Conflict Resolution Center, Wurud Yassin, explained on behalf of the campaign for securing Palestinian women's rights the importance of the campaign's activities and events and the need for the Judicial Council to take part in supporting this approach in order to protect women's rights in accordance with the logic of religion and Islamic law, explaining that the High Judicial Council's role will be influential in supporting the coalition's document against the killing of women in Palestinian society.<\/p>\n
For his part, Sheikh Ideis explained that the Council embraces and sponsors women's issues and provides them with support from the religious and sharia side, as well as working to oppose the killing of women, since women are the other half of society, adding: \"The Council has taken part in a number of radio programmes aimed at raising awareness of women's rights and opposing the killing of women.\"<\/p>\n
The president of the High Council of Sharia Judiciary said: \"The Council has issued several articles opposing the killing of women, and on a personal level I call for the death penalty to be carried out against any killer in our Islamic society, and the Palestinian woman who has struggled and who protects the land of Palestine has the right to enjoy safety and stability,\" stressing that his Council supports every approach and campaign advocating for women in Palestine.<\/p>\n
For his part, Sheikh Nasser Al-Qarm, representative of the High Council of Sharia Judiciary, pointed out that Islam and the Holy Qur'an provide for protecting women and giving them their lawful rights at all times, in a way that does not contradict religious law, considering that customs and traditions have prevailed over the application of the principles of the true faith, which drives some to commit immoral and inhumane crimes.<\/p>\n
For her part, the lawyer at the Conflict Resolution Center, Sahar Abu Salha, explained that the judiciary's role and its support for these cases is important at this stage, particularly in following up a number of killings directed at women, which show a large increase. She called for working to issue a Palestinian penal code opposing the killing of women, noting that the articles the judiciary works with are Jordanian legal texts that have been amended, that these texts are still in use in the Palestinian courts and that a killer can escape punishment.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
