The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution took part in the events of the first social accountability forum in Palestine, held yesterday at the municipal cultural centre in Khan Younis governorate, with official participation from the government and the municipalities and institutional participation from the associations partnering with the German Cooperation (GIZ), which supported the forum's events, in addition to public attendance and media coverage.<\/p>\n
At the opening of the forum's events, the minister of local government, Dr. Mohammed Al-Farra, set out the role of local bodies in taking decisions that serve citizens on the basis of clear criteria that allow the citizen to know the procedures for dealing with municipalities and local councils. He added: \"My ministry is keen for citizens to contribute to decision-making within the scope of responsibility and to help strengthen the concepts of social accountability in Palestine.\"<\/p>\n
In the address on behalf of the partner associations, the deputy director general of the Conflict Resolution Center, Eng. Iyad Abu Hjair, pointed to the need to strengthen the relationship between civil society and government bodies in order to support citizens by providing better services and programmes within society. He stressed that the tools of social accountability strengthen trust between the active citizen and the municipalities, so as to arrive at an environment that is safe and suitable for all its citizens and to strengthen the principles of mutual understanding and transparency with official institutions.<\/p>\n
The social accountability forum's events included a series of workshops on the role of citizens in strengthening the performance of local bodies, on the importance of using the tools of social accountability and on the role of youth participation at local level, in addition to a set of comedy performances by the poet Muntaser Al-Abadla and the comedy group \"Bas Ya Zalameh\".<\/p>\n
Those present engaged with the stands of the partner organisations, which presented a set of their achievements in working towards clear social accountability within society, with visitors expressing their admiration for these achievements. A group of artists also displayed their artworks expressing community issues and human stories about the Palestinian cause.<\/p>\n
It is noted that the German Cooperation (GIZ) funded this forum, with the participation of a group of civil society organisations, namely the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, the Bunyan Association for Training and Evaluation, the Pyalara organisation, the Aisha Association and the Al-Hayat wal-Amal Association.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
