\nYesterday the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution celebrated the launch of the project \"Stronger oversight, better justice\", funded by the United Nations Development Programme, Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP).
\nThe ceremony was attended by the deputy director general of the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, Iyad Abu Hjair, the deputy director of the Access to Justice and Rule of Law Programme at the United Nations Development Programme, Ibrahim Abu Shamala, and Salama Bseiso, deputy head of the Bar Association in the Gaza Strip, in addition to a number of media professionals, lawyers and representatives of civil society organisations, at the Al-Deira Hotel in Gaza City.
\nOn the project's general aim, the general coordinator, Anwar Azzam, said the project will amount to a qualitative development in access to justice in the Gaza Strip, by improving the situation of justice in the Strip through strengthening oversight of the justice facilities and providing legal aid to vulnerable groups.<\/p>\n
He explained that the project will work to build and strengthen the capacities of those working in law enforcement, lawyers and media graduates, in addition to monitoring criminal justice through field visits to the justice facilities, providing legal aid to prisoners and juveniles to support their capacity to reach justice, and increasing prisoners' awareness of their rights.
\nFor his part, Fadi Hamad, the project's lawyer, said that 200 prisoners and juveniles will be enabled to reach justice through legal assistance, that awareness meetings will be held reaching 600 prisoners, and that a study will be prepared on the legal situation of the justice sector.
\nIbrahim Abu Shamala expressed his pleasure at the launch of the project, noting that there will be an international conference on monitoring justice in cooperation with the partners of the United Nations Development Programme, in addition to a documentary film competition and an evaluation of the best written media work.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
