\nThe camp \"The Homeland and the Future Bring Us Together\", organised by the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution within the Coalition of Civil Forces, restored dialogue between the young staff of the student blocs inside the Palestinian universities, through a closed camp in which the student blocs of differing factional affiliations took part in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank at the same time.<\/p>\n
On holding the camp, the deputy director general of the Conflict Resolution Center, Iyad Abu Hjair, stressed that it comes in the context of the accumulated efforts the Centre has made over years to restore cohesion and national unity and to strengthen the channels of dialogue between the various groups within Palestinian society. He added: \"We look to the future and to investing in young people towards development and building the Palestinian state, and to pressing decision-makers to move towards ending the division through the united voices of young people calling for national unity to be entrenched.\"<\/p>\n
Thirty young people took part in the camp, from among the directors and representatives of the student blocs at the Palestinian universities. It was organised over three days as a closed camp including a set of events and items to increase communication and engagement among the young people, in addition to a series of seminars and dialogue meetings with a number of leaders and representatives of the Palestinian factions in Gaza.<\/p>\n
In the dialogue meetings, the representative of the Fatah Movement, Dr. Atef Abu Saif, said that the division amounts to a second Nakba for the Palestinian people and that his movement has extended its hands towards reconciliation, through the position of President Mahmoud Abbas in strengthening national unity and completing reconciliation. He said: \"Fatah sees the completion of reconciliation as coming through resuming voter registration in the Gaza Strip, and completing the elections file will be achieved through a national consensus government whose basic task is to supervise the elections in the future.\"<\/p>\n
Abu Saif considered that his movement is confident the new Egyptian leadership will help complete reconciliation, and that we await the results of the coming meeting between President Abbas and Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi next Wednesday in Cairo. He pointed out that Fatah rejects political detention in all its forms and calls for agreement on a national way to resolve this problem, and that Fatah considers negotiations with the occupation one of the means of the Palestinian struggle, along with the use of international diplomacy in addition to popular resistance and all the means legitimate for peoples.<\/p>\n
For his part, the representative of the Hamas Movement, Dr. Ahmed Youssef, explained that the Palestinian factions have lost credibility with one another in the dialogue process, and that Palestinian society is living in a state of negative polarisation through attempts to praise one faction at the expense of another. He stressed that among the reasons reconciliation has not been completed is that some foreign states were biased and not even-handed in ending the division, among them the former Egyptian regime, which was against the existence of an Islamic system in Gaza and whose role was not honest in trying to improve the picture.<\/p>\n
The representative of the Hamas Movement went on to say: \"Hamas showed flexibility in its readiness for the Arab League to intervene with an initiative to end the division during the visit of the former secretary-general of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, to Gaza, and to work on coordination between Hamas and Fatah, but the former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak rejected this initiative at the time.\" He expressed the hope that the new Egyptian leadership would bring good news of achieving reconciliation and of pressing the American administration to end the internal Palestinian division, and that the Palestinian factions would work on engaging with popular resistance, which guarantees the restoration of Palestinian rights to the Palestinian people.<\/p>\n
In the address on behalf of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Front's representative explained that Palestinian society needs more dialogue among its people, because if the political leaderships are unable to hold dialogue, the young people within the factions will be the message and the fuel for ending the division. He added: \"The political leaderships make light of citizens' minds, because they link the formation of a government to the electoral register and there is no serious political decision to end the division. On the other hand, all the agreements signed with Israel lead to Palestinian rights not being fully restored.\"<\/p>\n
For his part, the representative of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine spoke of how the failure to achieve reconciliation lies in the existence of negative factional and party interests that do not wish Palestinian society well and that benefit from entrenching the division. He explained that closing the file of political detention in the West Bank and agreeing to form a national consensus government would both help mend the rift between Fatah and Hamas, and that everyone must shoulder their national responsibilities towards the Palestinian people.<\/p>\n
The director of the Conflict Resolution Center branch in Hebron, Saad Shalaldeh, opened the camp \"The Homeland and the Future Bring Us Together\" with the participation of 16 young people from the student blocs at the Palestinian universities in the West Bank. He stressed that this gathering aims to involve young people in decision-making and to form groups that press the Palestinian leaderships to end the division, which has had a negative effect on all groups in society, including its political, economic and social aspects. He valued the efforts and the role students play inside the universities in ending the division, through carrying out a range of public activities and events and mobilising to embody national unity.<\/p>\n
For his part, the political activist Badran Jaber spoke of how the Palestinian scene has not witnessed a division on this scale since the launch of the Palestinian revolution, and of its serious consequences for the Palestinian national movement and for the establishment of a Palestinian state in the future. He added: \"The failure to achieve reconciliation is the result of unilateral decision-making and quota-sharing between Fatah and Hamas, the failure to involve the other political factions in the agreements signed, such as the Doha and Cairo agreements, in addition to the failure to attend to the makers of the future among young people by raising them away from party allegiance and supporting respect for differing views.\"<\/p>\n
In an address by the deputy governor of Jericho and the Jordan Valley, Jamal Al-Rajoub called on young people to draw up a plan and programme of events to end the division, simultaneously in the West Bank and Gaza, to increase peaceful protest activities and to provide all the resources the gathering needs to demonstrate against the division. He pointed out that participation must include all groups of the local community in order to press decision-makers to put an end to their disputes and to move forward with the Palestinian national project towards achieving a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n
