Officials and lawyers called for the need to work on developing the reform and detention centres for prisoners in the Gaza Strip and to enact legislation, laws and regulations governing the reform and rehabilitation centres in the Gaza governorates.<\/p>\n
These calls came during a workshop entitled \"The legal situation of prisoners in the Gaza Strip\", held by the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution with the participation of Lieutenant Colonel Nasser Suleiman, director general of the General Directorate of Reform and Rehabilitation Centres, and attended by officers charged with law enforcement, reconciliation figures and a number of human rights centres and lawyers.<\/p>\n
At the start of the workshop, the head of the legal unit at the Conflict Resolution Center, Younis Al-Tahrawi, said his Centre is keen to attend to the rights of male and female prisoners in the Gaza governorates, through communication and coordination with the reform and rehabilitation centres on the one hand and providing legal representation for them in the courts in accordance with the recognised legal principles and procedures. He stressed that the Centre has carried out a range of events and workshops to improve prisoners' psychological, social and legal conditions, and that the coming period will see more plans activated to ensure prisoners are helped.<\/p>\n
For his part, Lieutenant Colonel Suleiman explained that the reform and rehabilitation centres in the Gaza governorates are concerned with improving prisoners' general conditions despite the shortage of resources and means and the difficult security situation, from the continual evacuation of security premises on the one hand to the shortage of logistical requirements that need to be provided inside the prisons. He added: \"We have a number of development programmes for prisoners, and we have also completed the building of more rooms inside the prisons in the North prison and Khan Younis, in addition to opening a new floor for inmates in the North governorate, and the coming months will see a fall in overcrowding levels inside the prisons.\"<\/p>\n
During the interventions from those present, the protection officer at the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza, Nouran Hawwas, explained that one of the roles of the ICRC's protection department is to visit the prisons and police stations in Gaza and to help monitor detainees' conduct and conditions and provide recommendations on how prison administrations deal with inmates. She pointed out that the protection department works in complete confidence, particularly in identifying detainees' whereabouts, and that we are keen for prisoners to be treated in accordance with international laws and conventions.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
