The project for providing legal aid to women in need at the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution held a round table meeting entitled \"The media and its role in activating women's issues: inheritance, property and housing\" at the premises of the Wifaq Association for Supporting Women in Rafah governorate in the south of the Gaza Strip, with the participation of a number of media professionals and community activists.
\nIn a paper on the media outlets that engage with women's issues, the media professional and specialist in women's affairs, Majida Al-Balbisi, explained that the media in all its forms relies on presenting varied material to speak about women, whether through writing reports, journalistic stories or even the art of caricature. She added: \"Palestinian women have rights guaranteed by the laws, but the picture is not satisfactory: there are cases of clear violence against women, and there is also a wish to shed light on examples of creative women who have struggled and sacrificed in Palestinian society.\"<\/p>\n

Al-Balbisi pointed out that a number of women journalists working in the media tell stories and news according to the policies of the owners of those outlets, as she put it, amid the absence of women as editors-in-chief or owners of local radio stations. She praised the imams in the mosques for raising, a short time ago, women's issues of inheritance and housing in the Friday prayers, in order to strengthen legal and community awareness among the public towards protecting women's rights.<\/p>\n

For her part, the media professional and women's rights activist Suad Abu Khatla said: \"The media is the maker of policy and the influencer of public opinion, and the Palestinian media has its own particularity: there is a failure to present women's problems and issues before decision-makers and officials, despite women's role in developing the local community.\" She pointed out that the local media has been preoccupied with talking about the achievements of parties and factions, amid the absence of any discussion of Palestinian women's issues and rights and of finding suitable mechanisms to protect them through the media.<\/p>\n

For his part, the media professional and community activist Saji Al-Shawa explained that social media such as Facebook and Twitter now see engagement and participation in support of women, the latest being the solidarity with the prisoner Hana Shalabi online, particularly among young people. He stressed that women are affected by society's customs and traditions and so fear speaking about the violations they may be subjected to by their husband or their family, at a rate reaching 65.4% in the Palestinian territories, and the need to work on encouraging and making husbands and wives aware of using methods of dialogue for the cohesion of the Palestinian family.<\/p>\n

The participants recommended the need to establish a media channel dedicated to women, issued by the Ministry of Women's Affairs or by women's organisations, to prepare a national strategic plan to activate the media's role on women's issues, and to work on producing a group of women leaders able to serve women's interests and issues within the local community.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that the project for providing legal aid at the Conflict Resolution Center, funded by the Norwegian Refugee Council, has held five round tables on a number of community and legal issues in the past period in the Gaza governorates, in support of a range of groups in Palestinian society.<\/span><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
