\nThe project for providing legal aid to vulnerable women at the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution held its second round table meeting entitled \"Women and their right to property, housing and land, between the injustice of custom and the slowness of the law\" at the premises of the Aisha Association in Gaza City, with the participation of a number of women's and human rights organisations.
\nAt the start of the meeting, the professor of Islamic and linguistic studies at Al-Azhar University, Dr. Ismail Bulbul, stressed in a paper that religion and Islamic law have supported women's position in their right to ownership, whether owning money or property or entering the arena of trade. He added: \"The Holy Qur'an and the noble prophetic Sunna were clear in their explicit wording in supporting women, and the best example is Lady Khadija, the wife of the Messenger of God, who was among the great merchants before and after Islam, which is evidence of Islam's support for women's right to ownership.\"<\/p>\n
For his part, the psychologist, social specialist and lecturer at the Islamic University, Dr. Jamil Al-Tahrawi, reviewed in a paper some of the reasons why women refrain from claiming their rights, among them women's lack of awareness of their rights and fear of punishment and of estrangement between relatives. He explained that 83% of women do not claim their social and lawful rights, in addition to the entrenched negative view of customs and traditions and the excessive sensitivity among women and their fear of claiming their rights.<\/p>\n
For his part, the lawyer of the project for providing legal aid to vulnerable women, Ahmed Hassouna, explained in his paper that the problems of women's ownership lie in knowing the procedures to be followed to prove ownership or to remove encroachment, and the procedures required to proceed with actions relating to real estate disputes, such as specific performance, partition of joint property and claiming inheritance shares. He stressed the need not to prolong the determination of women's ownership and inheritance actions in the courts, which remain in the courts' corridors for more than five years, which strengthens women's feeling that there is a harmony between a law whose texts fall short and the reinforcement of customary practices that deprive women of their rights to property, housing and inheritance.<\/p>\n
The participants called for approaching the competent higher bodies to address judges to respond to the cases of women deprived of ownership and inheritance, as well as calling on the Ministry of Awqaf to warn society against depriving women of their rights, to increase the level of educating women about their rights within society, in addition to calling for the publication of a number of magazines and booklets to make women aware and to activate the questions of inheritance and ownership in the media in all its forms.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
