The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution announced the actual start of implementing the national strategy to combat violence against women in the Palestinian territories and of work to make women aware of their duties and of the rights guaranteed to them by Palestinian law within the local community, from a strategic perspective.<\/p>\n
This announcement came during the events of the annual closing conference of the project for supporting and empowering women victims of violence, held yesterday in both Gaza City and Ramallah, with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Women's Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the sharia courts and the organisations supporting women in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.<\/p>\n
At the start of the conference, the projects director at the Conflict Resolution Center, Abdel Moneim Al-Tahrawi, stressed that the practical vision for applying the national strategy to combat violence against women rests on three levels: prevention and awareness in society, continuous protection and support, and in addition the provision of treatment and social reintegration. He expected that the coming period would see real change in the local laws aimed at protecting women from violence, the treatment of women's issues in the media in a systematic way, and the organisation of work among women's organisations to combat violence.<\/p>\n
For her part, the coordinator of the General Secretariat of the General Union of Palestinian Women, Amal Hamad, called on the legal and humanitarian bodies, including the United Nations, to adopt clear policies and steps towards the particularity of the Palestinian situation and to present the suffering of Palestinian women under occupation, displacement and restriction. She added: \"We believe it is our duty to demand our right to protection under international law, and we will continue our efforts to advocate for Palestinian women and to affirm serious work among women's organisations grounded in the popular base of women and the nation.\"<\/p>\n
For his part, the head of the Supreme Council of the Sharia Judiciary and president of the Supreme Sharia Court in the Gaza governorates, Dr. Hassan Al-Joujou, said in his paper that the sharia courts have taken several measures in favour of women, and that the coming days will see an important stage in taking effective measures that contribute to easing the burden on abused women, particularly in the area of hearing women's cases before the sharia courts, most notably raising the age of custody for women whose husbands have died, under the amendment of article 118 of the family rights law by the Legislative Council. He said: \"We have established the maintenance fund for divorced wives, widows and children. This fund focuses on pursuing those against whom judgments have been issued so that they pay the rights owed to wives, in addition to setting up departments to enforce the judicial rulings issued by the sharia courts, as provided for in the sharia judiciary law no. 3\/2011.\"<\/p>\n
On the role of women's coalitions in combating violence against women, the director of the Women's Affairs Centre, Amal Siyam, explained that over the past years women's organisations have worked on founding coalitions to support women, most notably the forum of NGOs against violence against women, the Amal coalition and the Wisal coalition, to activate the resolutions that support women, among them resolution 1325 for the protection of women within the framework of the United Nations resolution. She pointed to the need to maintain the continuity of these coalitions and networks in order to press for positive change in favour of women's issues and to deepen strategic relations and partnerships among women's organisations and associations.<\/p>\n
At the opening of the conference in Ramallah, the director general of the public affairs directorate in Ramallah and Al-Bireh governorate, Ahmed Al-Khatib, affirmed the governorate's continuous support for abused women in the West Bank. He stressed that Ramallah and Al-Bireh governorate will take the conference's recommendations seriously and implement its clauses as soon as possible to ensure justice is achieved for women victims of violence.<\/p>\n
On the image of women in the Arab media, Dr. Saeed Ayyad, director of programmes at Palestine TV and a lecturer at Bethlehem University, presented data and research studies on the image of women in the Palestinian, Lebanese and Egyptian media and on the different ways women's issues are handled. He expressed his deep belief in the media's ability to show women in a positive light and to shed light on women's needs and suffering alongside their creativity and their continuous struggle within society.<\/p>\n
On the vision of the Ministry of Justice in the West Bank, the coordinator at the criminal justice unit at the Ministry of Justice, Issa Barham, spoke about the legal framework for supporting and advocating for gender and about the ministry's aspirations to enact and apply a number of laws in favour of women in the coming period. He explained that coordination is under way with a number of civil society organisations and educational institutions in the local community to increase guidance and education on the issues of supporting Palestinian women.<\/p>\n
On women's movements as part of political and social movements, the researcher Sahar Al-Qawasmi, a lecturer at Hebron University, stressed in her paper the important role played by political and social movements as a tool of pressure and advocacy in the Palestinian territories. She explained that women have been able to increase their social engagement through their effective participation in movements with political and social orientations and by creating clear influence in support of women.<\/p>\n
It is noted that the project for supporting and empowering women victims of violence at the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution is funded by the Norwegian People's Aid programme (NPA) to carry out its programmes and activities in the governorates of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and to support the group of abused women.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
