The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution recommended updating the personal status law in the Palestinian territories in line with the changes and progress in Palestinian society and to meet citizens' needs, and recommended working to improve and develop the family meeting points that protect children and mothers.
\nThese recommendations came during a workshop entitled \"Towards family meeting points that protect the child and the mother\", organised by the project for supporting women victims of violence at the Conflict Resolution Center with funding from Norwegian People's Aid (NPA), with the participation of representatives of the sharia courts, the reconciliation committees and the police and in the presence of a number of rights and women's organisations, at the La Terrina restaurant on 12\/12\/2011.
\nAt the start of the workshop, the legal adviser at the Conflict Resolution Center, Younis Al-Tahrawi, stressed, through his paper on the family meeting point after 10 years of work, that the Centre has been able to provide a number of family meeting points to enable divorced families to see their children in safe places away from visits at police stations. He added: \"In coordination with the sharia judiciary council, the police stations and reconciliation figures, we have been able to provide places designated for visits, and the total number of visits in the governorates of the Gaza Strip in the past period reached 227 visits for children and their families.\"<\/p>\n
On the sharia courts' vision for cooperation with civil society, Sheikh Omar Nofal, president of the Court of Appeal in Gaza, praised the strong relationship between the sharia courts and the Conflict Resolution Center in strengthening a culture of affection among families and ending cases of revenge and of taking it out on the children. He pointed to the need to establish more family meeting points, given that there are 10 sharia courts in the Gaza Strip, which need coverage to enforce the courts' rulings in visitation and custody cases.
\nSheikh Nofal went on to say: \"The sharia courts have introduced family counselling departments, and 1,700 cases were brought to the department during 2011. The department contributed to addressing and resolving 20% of the cases between spouses before they were referred to the sharia judiciary.\" He explained that a wife left in limbo can renew her suit to claim her rights if the judiciary rejects her case the first time, so as to ensure she receives the rights lawfully due to her under sharia and the law.<\/p>\n
On the legal working mechanisms with the family meeting points, the enforcement officer of the Gaza Court of First Instance, Rami Salouha, explained that their role lies in enforcing the sharia rulings provided for in the enforcement law and in reducing wasted time. He called for activating the role of reconciliation figures in finding realistic solutions between spouses before visitation rulings are issued by the sharia courts, and for joining efforts to restore cohesion to families in the local community.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
