The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution held a public meeting at the Bureij Services Club in the Middle governorate entitled \"Civil organisations and their role in strengthening civil peace\", within the events of the project \"Women for civil peace\". The meeting was held in the presence of Mr. Mohammed Khalaf, deputy head of the popular committee for refugees in Bureij camp, and Mrs. Sobhiya Al-Hasanat, member of the General Union of Women. Karam Abu Muailaq, the project coordinator, stated that the aim of this meeting is to make citizens aware of the importance of civil peace and to strengthen its foundations and spread a culture of tolerance among the various members of society in order to reach social peace and end the state of division among the groups of society. It should be noted here that many matters relating to civil peace were discussed, where Mrs. Sobhiya presented a working paper in which she addressed some of the activities of civil organisations and institutions that have dealt with the subject of civil peace. She confirmed that this role remains weak, and that the reason for this goes back to several causes, among them: the complexity and entanglement of the reconciliation files, external interference, the influence of the political factions, and other factors particular to these organisations such as competition, weak coordination, limited means and donors' lack of interest in the subject of reconciliation. Mr. Mohammed Khalaf also presented a working paper in which he spoke about the effects and consequences of the division on the refugee cause at home and in the diaspora, and about the role civil and civil society organisations must play in order to overcome the state of division, by spreading awareness among the members of society and calling for the supreme national interest to be given precedence over party interests. At the end of the meeting the floor was opened for discussion and interventions from those present on the foundations of civil peace, strengthening a culture of tolerance among the members of society, and the solutions that could be taken into account to help end the state of division.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
