By Amna Mahmoud. \"A woman with scholarly, administrative and political competence may hold any post except the supreme caliphate.\" That is among the most eloquent statements I found during my journey through a set of the writings of Sheikh Mohammed Al-Ghazali, may God have mercy on him, as he sought to establish that the time has come for women to be a foundation of the contemporary Islamic project, relying in this on their being an essential building block in the course of human development, given the weight they represent in society. If you try to trace women's contributions across the ages and eras and in various lands, you will find them no less courageous or self-sacrificing than men, worthy of being present in every arena, whether in love or in war, until you reach the lady Khadija, may God be pleased with her, with her radiant stands in steadying the Prophet's heart, peace be upon him, when she believed in him while people disbelieved, and was with him in the darkest circumstances, up to the roughness of the road, the desolation of the path and the enemies lying in wait in the darkness of night, which did not deter the woman of the two waistbands from carrying food and water to the noble Messenger and to her father at the cave of Thawr. That remarkable type of woman who found sweetness in suffering for God's sake and for the honour of His religion was one of the results of Islam's presence when it linked women to the houses of God, giving them the springs of religious, scholarly and civic culture so that they might know their religion, their livelihood and their return in life, and take part as independent persons in decision-making. The first of the foundations Islam laid down is that the woman who carries the concern of religion and of Islamic work, so that it takes hold of her thinking and becomes her thought, her work and her constant preoccupation, given her sincerity of faith and depth of awareness, is the only one who can master the planting of great meanings in the souls of generations, by the method of love and graciousness that is unique to great Islam. As for the use of the mind and the building of life, both man and woman bear its burdens, and so we must raise our daughters in an upright way based on purifying character, developing talents and aptitudes, improving their behaviour and broadening their understanding, so that they may be a foundation of an open Islamic thought through their good conduct. They are truly an effective force for the renaissance of the Islamic nation and they are the ones who make its lasting glory and its splendid victory, because they are half of society and because they are the ones who kindle the zeal, ardour and fervour of the other half for this religion. Islam has the greater claim to them and to their effect in developing a reforming Islamic thought that criticises all the stagnant customs that shackle Islamic thought and tighten the noose further, for Islam came to make things easy and not difficult, came to ease people's affairs with graciousness, and did not come based on severity and a corrupt religiosity that is not among the firm principles of the Islamic religion. The role of women in society and politics are matters settled and decided in sharia, which encourage women's freedom to move effectively outside the home socially, intellectually and politically, as long as the requirements of these occupations do not conflict with their nature and their function in the family. Their application of virtues and public manners in the field of popular, intellectual and political awareness is the starting point towards an Islamic renaissance of greater honour and glory.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
