Gaza: the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution held a workshop at the Islamic University entitled \"The rule of law and its role in strengthening civil peace\", within the series of public meetings and workshops carried out by the project \"Women for civil peace\", which targets specifically male and female university students from every framework, orientation and party affiliation. The guest of this meeting was Dr. Hisham Abu Al-Nada, president of the magistrates' court in Gaza. The workshop was run by Ibrahim Abu Rahma, assistant project coordinator, in the presence of 30 female students from the faculty of law. Dr. Abu Al-Nada began the workshop by defining the concept of the rule of law, which is one of the most important factors and foundations of social peace in any society, and stressed respect for the law and commitment to applying the spirit of the law, which necessarily leads to equality and non-discrimination among the members of a single society. Dr. Abu Al-Nada also called for strengthening a culture of law in Palestinian society so that citizens become aware of all their rights and the duties entrusted to them, and he also called for amending the laws in force in Palestine in line with the particular Palestinian conditions our people live in. Dr. Abu Al-Nada also stressed that the judicial authority has an essential role in establishing the rule of law and in preserving the rights of society's members and preventing their violation by the executive or legislative authority (should the latter issue a law contrary to the constitution) or by individuals. Given the importance of the role the judicial authority plays and its being an indispensable requirement in any free society living under the rule of law, it must be emphasised that the judiciary must be fully independent, and workshops must be held with legal and judicial figures to formulate a paper of understanding between them that keeps men of law and the judiciary away from party and factional tugs of war, since they are men who apply the law without discrimination or exception.
