Gaza: the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution held a workshop at the Palestine of Tomorrow Association entitled \"The value of tolerance and its effect in overcoming the division\". This workshop comes within the events of the project \"Women for civil peace\", which is carrying out a series of public meetings and workshops at many Palestinian universities and at associations and community organisations. The workshop was run by Dalia Abu Laban, a member of the student leadership team that the Centre trained in the subjects of civil peace, advocacy and mobilisation and in running workshops. This team forms an important base for spreading the concepts of civil peace and the culture of tolerance and acceptance of the other. The workshop was attended by around 25 male and female university students interested in this subject from all the Palestinian universities in the Gaza Strip. Dalia Abu Laban addressed several concepts, among them the concept of civil peace and the foundations of its existence in any society, and the concept of tolerance and its long-lasting effect in removing the psychological effects arising from the state of division in our Palestinian society. She also explained how tolerance and unity form a state of complementarity and not of discord: unity will never be built on the ruins of particularities or on melting down individual, factional and sectarian differences, but rather through managing differences in a civilised and non-uniform way that founds and frames a comprehensive unity. She stressed that tolerance towards the other never means laxity or a failure to hold to each individual's own values, for harshness and severity in social relations are not the norm and are contrary to every value; the height of holding to one's values is tolerance and dealing with others gently and well. This workshop also produced several recommendations, the most important of them being: the need to work on spreading the value of tolerance among the members of the Palestinian people, particularly in the Gaza Strip, so that the state of Palestinian division and its consequences may be overcome, and this can only be done by increasing educational workshops and raising public awareness of these gracious religious values.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
