The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution in Nablus governorate in the West Bank conducted an opinion poll on the views and attitudes of Palestinian workers in the West Bank regarding their wage levels and living conditions. This poll comes within the cooperation agreement between the Centre and Catholic Relief Services (CRS), with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and within the Active Citizenship project for adopting a minimum wage.<\/p>\n
The study polled the views of 6,000 Palestinian workers in the West Bank distributed across the governorates of Nablus, Tulkarm, Jenin, Bethlehem, Hebron and Jericho in July of this year. The questionnaire included 52 items distributed across five main areas: the level of satisfaction with wages, the living and economic level, general satisfaction with the living standard of workers' families, the level of knowledge of the various labour rights, and the proposed solutions and the workers' required demands.<\/p>\n
The main findings of the study showed that 57.2% of those working in Palestine believe that the level of the wage they receive is suitable only to a low degree, while 55% of those working in Palestine confirmed that their wages do not match the effort they put in, and 70.6% of workers in Palestine called for the need for a court specialised in workers' cases and fees, which is a necessary requirement for them and to a high degree.<\/p>\n
The study indicated that 54.3% of workers in Palestine fear losing their jobs if they ask for any increase in their wages, while for 56.7% of workers in Palestine their level of income covers only their essential needs, and to a high degree. The study concluded that 51.7% of workers in Palestine believe, to a high degree, that the labour law is not at the required level, since the employer is able to get around it and evade paying the worker's rights and fees.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
