By the counsellor Haniya Baalousha. The child (H.) is 9 years old and lives in the north of the Gaza Strip. One day she was asleep in her bed when she was startled by the sound of an explosion, so she jumped up and hurried to see what had happened, and there she saw her cousin, who lives with them in the same house, drenched in his blood with his body torn apart. The child began screaming and ran to her room weeping, her body trembling with fear. But because of the severity of the shock to her family, they did not pay attention to the child at first. Two days after this event, war was waged on the Gaza Strip and two of her cousins were killed, and after that the child's condition grew worse, particularly during the days of the war, since the occupation's tanks were positioned at the door of the house, so that whenever the child looked out of the window she saw them. All these events and painful sights were the cause of the child's distress and deterioration, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress appeared in her: intense fear, isolation, withdrawal, involuntary bedwetting, a decline in her level of academic attainment, a loss of appetite and neglect of her appearance. As a result of the child's poor condition, her mother brought her to the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, and when she was presented the psychologist saw that the first priority in solving the child's problem was to release what was inside her of fears and tragic secrets, by means of play, drawing and popping balloons. After that the child began to speak about her problem and about her strong motivation to overcome it, and time after time it was the child herself who would speak about herself and say: \"I wish I could go back to how I was, good at school, playing with the girls in the street, and stop wetting myself, because I am ashamed in front of my family when I am wet.\" From here the specialist began to reinforce and encourage her to overcome the problems, and made the mother aware of how to deal with the child and care for her, to wake her at night to go to the bathroom and give her a gift when she woke up dry, along with an agreement about returning to her studies and making up the days lost without study, since the exam period was approaching, which encouraged the child to study. After three sessions with the child she rid herself of the problem of involuntary bedwetting, and the child began to get high marks at school. After seven sessions the mother came to speak about her child's condition, which had improved and returned to what it had been: she talks with her family, sits among them, laughs and plays as she used to. The mother had with her the child's report card, showing an average of 91%. And so the problems the child had been suffering from as a result of the events she had been through were resolved, and the child now lives in happiness and joy.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
