The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution has completed the first stage of the project for the rights of Palestinian children affected by armed conflict through community-based mechanisms in the Gaza Strip and northern Lebanon, in partnership with Save the Children and with support from the European Union. Seven local venues were reached in the following areas (Beit Lahia, Beit Hanoun, Jabalia, Bureij, Al-Qarara, Khuzaa, Al-Maghazi) and were equipped by furnishing the sites and employing seven teachers and seven counsellors to work on educational support for children at the basic stage (second, third and fourth grades). Work was also carried out with 30 children at each site in two sessions, morning and afternoon. During the first stage, 48 boys and girls graduated after their degree of improvement was assessed by a dedicated assessment committee, and 48 boys and girls who had also been affected by armed conflict were enrolled in their place. In addition, 112 parents' meetings were held over the previous nine months, along with 98 open days with the children and their families, and 343 home visits were carried out in the target areas, at a rate of 7 visits at each organisation per month, aimed at engaging with the family environment and providing continuous psychological and social support to them and to children with behavioural and psychological problems. A dedicated child protection network was also formed and qualified by holding 3 training courses that reached both the directors and those nominated by the organisations for the process of monitoring and documentation, training them in the field of advocacy and in monitoring and documenting violations of children's rights. Now the second stage is about to begin, which is a continuation of the first stage, so that work will continue with the same children, since this group is in urgent need of continuous reinforcement and further protection. Mrs. Hanan Abu Gharqoud, coordinator for the Middle governorate and Khan Younis, stated that the project's second stage will include many events aimed at improving the pupils' academic level through support lessons in mathematics and Arabic, developing their energies and strengthening their self-confidence through psychological support activities, and strengthening their protection and the attention given to them by parents, teachers and members of the local community.
