This project works in cooperation and partnership with civil society organisations in the country, through a set of community activities that work on harnessing the energies of civil society organisations, workers, experts and interested parties to secure the enactment of a minimum wage law.

Among the project's activities carried out by the Palestinian Center is the opinion poll, for which a specialist economic expert was consulted to draw up and draft the questions of the poll's questionnaire, targeting a group of workers in the six target governorates.

The questionnaire covered several areas relating to the living and economic level of the Palestinian worker, the main ones being:

1. The level of satisfaction with wages.

2. The living level and the economic level.

3. General satisfaction with the living standard of workers' families.

4. The level of knowledge of the various labour rights.

5. The proposed solutions and the workers' required demands.

6. The wage that could be adopted as a minimum wage.

7. The role of the Ministry of Labour in enforcing the law and the government's capacity to do so.

The poll also targeted several sectors of work, namely:

1. The agriculture and fishing sector.

2. The mining, quarrying and manufacturing sector.

3. The construction sector.

4. The trade, restaurants and hotels sector.

5. The transport, storage and communications sector.

6. Services and other branches.

The poll targeted 6,000 workers distributed across six governorates, 1,000 workers in each governorate (Nablus, Tulkarm, Jenin, Hebron, Bethlehem, Jericho). There was also a training course for a number of university graduates, 30 participants in all, who were trained in the methods of conducting a poll, and the participants in the training course were distributed across the target governorates in the north and the south.

During the fieldwork we sensed the extent of the great injustice done to the Palestinian worker, since the wage he receives is not enough to provide the basic necessities, and work also takes place in unsafe and unhealthy conditions. This requires the Ministry of Labour in particular, as the body supervising and following up workers' affairs, and the government in general, to follow up labour cases, to treat workers fairly, and to work seriously and press for the enactment and adoption of a minimum wage law and for the monitoring of industrial and commercial establishments.

Likewise, while the questionnaire was being filled in, there was a basic demand from the workers that their voice be conveyed to the officials and decision-makers at the Ministry of Labour and in the government, so that their cases may be looked into and their rights redressed.

[26

post-2958","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-research
["GET
