Khan Younis: the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, in cooperation with the Aman Charitable Association for Development, one of the Centre's partners with which the project for reducing the danger of illiteracy for children in the Gaza Strip is carried out with funding from the European Union, held a seminar entitled (School violence and its effect on pupils' level of attainment) in Khan Younis governorate, in the Qizan Al-Najjar area, in the conference hall of the College of Science and Technology. The seminar was attended by the parents of pupils and the residents of the area, a group of male and female pupils, a number of principals and teachers of government and UNRWA schools, and also a delegation from the College of Science and Technology headed by Dr. Mohammed Sayer Al-Araj, dean of the College of Science and Technology. The seminar was an open meeting between the parents and the school principals and teachers, where the discussion was introduced by Mr. Munir Shubair, director of the educational counselling department at the education directorate in Khan Younis governorate, who raised the subject of (school violence, sensing the problem, its causes, its effect, and how to remedy it), as well as the directorate's future vision for limiting school violence. Dr. Mahmoud Hamdan, school principal and educational inspector at UNRWA, referred to the subject of corporal punishment at schools, its methods, its causes and its effect on the pupil's level. For their part, the parents raised the problems they suffer in raising their children, the difficult circumstances they live in, their limited ability to follow up their children continuously at school, and that the teachers, by using violence with the pupils, particularly those of a low level, make their progress and improvement difficult. The school principals and teachers confirmed that parents' follow-up is one of the greatest factors helping to improve pupils' level, and that their absence affects their level negatively even if they are among the outstanding pupils. Omar Al-Fajm, coordinator at the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, confirmed the role of local community organisations in addressing the two problems of school violence and weak academic attainment, and the importance of strengthening the relationship between parents and schools and of communicating continuously in order to limit these problems facing pupils, focusing on the role played by the teachers and facilitators in the project for reducing the danger of illiteracy for the Strip's pupils, targeting more than 1,000 pupils during the current semester in three important subjects, namely mathematics, Arabic and English. Al-Fajm explained that the project's strategy is based on providing a safe and suitable atmosphere for the pupils by providing suitable places, in addition to providing an opportunity for psychological support for children through many recreational activities. The matter does not stop at that; rather the Centre seeks to develop the relationship with the parents, the school and the local community through many meetings similar to this one, distributed across the governorates of Gaza.
