A.D. is a child of five who was traumatised during the last war on the Gaza Strip and stopped speaking, refusing to talk to anyone, whether at home or at kindergarten. During the psychodrama sessions included in the psychosocial project for kindergarten children and their parents in the Gaza Strip, the child A.D. did not take part in the activities or speak with his peers, so as an activity leader I tried by every means to make him take part in the activities, but he was content to watch. When the puppet show began I noticed that he was drawn to the show and began to smile, but without uttering a word. Afterwards, when the children began to draw, I asked him whether he wanted to draw and he refused, but in the middle of the activity he took some colours and began to draw with the rest of the children. I pretended not to pay attention to him but watched him from a distance, and he had drawn many destroyed houses and armed forces. Although all the children spoke about their drawings, he remained silent. Afterwards gifts were distributed to the children to encourage them to draw more and because they had made wonderful drawings, and when I handed him his gift a look of happiness came over his face. The next day the grandmother of the child A.D. came and asked for the activity leader Mahmoud, so I went to meet her and she thanked me and told me that A.D. had spoken for the first time since the war, and that most of his talk was about the gift and the cap he had received and about the games and activities he had done with his peers. And when A.D. came the next day he began to speak with me and then spoke with all the children and also took part in all the activities and games. This story is one of the many success stories the project has achieved, which reflect the importance of these activities for children and their contribution to easing the pain and improving children's behaviour.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
