On Sunday 28\/2\/2010, the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution began the first events of the project \"Women for civil peace\", within the popular campaign for national reconciliation, with an introductory meeting about the campaign attended by a number of women active in civil and political work. The assistant project coordinator, Karam Abu Muailaq, began with a welcoming address in which she explained to those present the aim of this meeting and gave a general overview of the popular campaign for national reconciliation and the project \"Women for civil peace\". For his part, the director of the Gaza branch, Mr. Iyad Abu Hjair, noted that the aim of the campaign is to mend the political rift through popular initiatives in which citizens take part to claim their rights and to be made aware of the importance of national reconciliation. He set out the Centre's role in strengthening community reconciliation through the initiatives and events it has undertaken in order to strengthen a culture of tolerance between the two parties to the conflict, and also stressed the importance of women's role in the campaign and in the reconciliation process in general. For his part, the project coordinator, Mr. Mohammed Shamlakh, explained the idea of the campaign, setting out the project's various activities, where a team of women leaders will be formed made up of 25 women, another team of female university students made up of 20 students, a team of notables and mukhtars, and a team of volunteers supporting the project. The four teams will work in a complementary way to increase general awareness of the foundations, concepts and pillars of civil peace, adding that the four teams are about to undertake a campaign to press decision-makers to adopt the principles of civil peace, within a series of activities that will begin with a training course in the near future on the concepts of civil peace, advocacy and mobilisation, and then a number of workshops, public meetings and radio programmes.
