The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution in Nablus held a political seminar on Thursday entitled \"The objective prospects of Palestinian national reconciliation\". Farid Abu Dhahir, professor of media at An-Najah National University, presented a paper on the media's role in reconciliation, in which he laid great responsibility on the Palestinian media for strengthening and embodying the Palestinian division. Abu Dhahir said: \"The media and media professionals have played a major role in the division and have used inciting terms, which has embodied a culture of division among young people and children in Palestine.\" He noted the possibility of the media contributing to Palestinian reconciliation if it follows a considered approach that supports and creates a public opinion pressing the parties to the division to begin a national reconciliation that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people and their national constants. Abu Dhahir called on the media to carry out investigative reports to reveal the facts to society, to establish the causes of the division and how to address it, to put forward ideas for ending the division and to call on society to press the politicians. He confirmed the existence of a culture of fear among Palestinian journalists of being called to account by the management of the media outlet or by the security bodies, which act as a censor over journalistic work. For his part, Khalil Assaf, a member of the Cairo dialogue committee for the independents, said: \"The Hamas and Fatah movements do not want to reach an agreement and have interests and ties that prevent them from moving towards reconciliation.\" Assaf noted that \"the Palestinian organisations have committed a crime against the Palestinian people\", and traced the division back to more than 20 years ago, \"but in 2006 it was crowned militarily and with a rupture between the West Bank and Gaza\". For his part, the researcher and activist at the Centre, Mohammed Issa, confirmed that they work all the time on holding marches, seminars and meetings with the various sectors of the people to bring them closer and to resolve the Palestinian dispute and division.
