Hebron: the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, Hebron branch, held its conference entitled \"Palestinian women between reality and hope\", with support from the Norwegian People's Aid office, in the Taj Mahal hall in Hebron on Thursday 24\/12\/2009 at nine in the morning, attended by a large number of women and governmental, civil and media organisations. This conference comes within the Centre's activities in carrying out the project for supporting and empowering abused women in the Hebron area, which is being carried out for the fourth year running. In the welcoming address given by Mr. Saad Shalalda, he pointed to the Centre's role in adopting all the activities of concern to women in the Hebron area, and that it works hard to highlight women's role in Palestinian society by activating their roles. The address of the Minister of Women's Affairs, Rabiha Diab, pointed to Palestinian women's role through the stages of the Palestinian revolution, which springs from their ability to adapt in the hardest circumstances, which demonstrates this woman's ability to bear a large part of our people's struggle towards liberation and independence. Dr. Samir Abu Zneid, deputy governor of Hebron governorate, conveyed the greetings of President Abu Mazen and praised the efforts of the women's organisations in preserving the militant character of Palestinian women, stressing these organisations' ability to play a constructive role in serving Palestinian women. The first session began, chaired by Maysoun Al-Sharif, and included three working papers. The first paper was by Dr. Sahar Al-Qawasmi, member of the Legislative Council, who stressed the injustice of Palestinian laws towards women, presenting in her paper \"A critical view of the Palestinian legislation and laws concerning women\", the main legislation concerning women and explaining the discrimination in it, and that given the suspension of the Legislative Council, change is difficult at this moment. On the media's role, Badran Jaber spoke about the extent of the marginalisation Palestinian women suffer in all sectors of the print, broadcast and visual media, stressing that women's role as media professionals is still very weak. Nisreen Amro, director of education in Hebron, stressed the role of the curricula recently developed after the arrival of the Palestinian Authority, and that the curricula do what they can to narrow the gap between males and females in order to raise a Palestinian awareness that preserves women's rights. The first session included some discussions and interventions from those present. In the second session, chaired by Dr. Mariam Abu Turk, which was begun by the mufti Mohammed Masouda with his paper on women's role in Islam, he explained the rights Islam gave to women, stressing that Islam did not degrade women and made them a partner to men in every aspect of life. In her paper on violence as a phenomenon in Hebron governorate and the strategies women create in facing it, Sahar Al-Qawasmi, lecturer at Al-Quds Open University, confirmed that her study showed that women adopt many hidden strategies in order to fight violence, and that overt strategies are resorted to only in rare cases such as calling the police. Gandhi Rubai, director of the Independent Commission for Citizens' Rights, reviewed the penal sanctions in limiting the phenomenon of violence against women, stressing that the law absolutely prohibits any assault however small. The end of the session included discussion, recommendations and some interventions, which pointed to giving greater attention to women's role and strengthening that at the level of the media, the school curricula and upbringing at home, so that Palestinian women may take their true role in building society; also intensifying the work of organisations with one another and the diversity of organisations in their work plans; also making women and mothers aware of the sexual problems that occur in society; and also turning to the organisations that work to protect women for support and to offer help to women victims of violence.
