By Fayez Zaqout. Many are the memories and catastrophes recorded by contemporary Palestinian history. For more than sixty years our Palestinian people have been forcibly displaced and scattered, leaving their land and their property to live in tents in refugee camps at home and in the diaspora. The free world proclaimed at that time, on the tenth of December, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, whose covenants and clauses were drawn up to do justice to the world's peoples, except the Palestinian people, who still suffer. And a day later resolution 194 was issued, guaranteeing a just solution to our people's cause by their return to the land from which they were displaced, and their catastrophe continues. And in December 1987 the Palestinian people rose up to declare to the whole world that we are a people like the rest of the world's peoples and that we have a just cause that must be resolved. And in this month a year ago, while the sun was shining in the sky of Gaza, the brightness suddenly turned into clouds and thick smoke, announcing the start of the war on Gaza, which reaped tree, stone and human being alike. The streets filled with torn remains and destroyed houses and people left their homes and their land, so that history recorded once again a second catastrophe coinciding with the division among brothers, making it harsher on our hearts than the catastrophe of 1948. It placed us in difficult trials, and delegations and committees began to look for solutions for us, and we went back to the days and memories of the Peel Commission, of which our people said at the time: \"Perhaps at your hands it can be solved\" (playing on the name). But alas, alas. And the tragedy continues and Arab summits are held anew and solutions are put forward, throwing us once again into labyrinths and decisions that are hard to implement: once in Doha and once in Kuwait, and billions were allocated for rebuilding Gaza and we enter anew the whirlpool of difficult questions: to whom is it given? And when and how? And it remains a dream with no glimmer of hope coming from it, and the tragedy continues and the division remains dominant and the homeland remains in two halves and the situation remains as it is. Neither the blood of the martyrs nor the destruction nor the displacement has moved the politicians and decision-makers to bring about any change worth mentioning or to push reconciliation forward. And we enter once again the whirlpool of questions and precise calculations and weights: if a reconciliation agreement were concluded, would it serve my party's interest or not? And how and how much? And at the end of the journey, will national reconciliation be achieved and will history record a real victory for the rising generations?<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
