The decision came as a result of the persistent efforts of civil society organisations, following the killing of a girl from the town of Surif on the grounds of what is called family honour, thereby halting the series of killings of women who fell victim without cause, which is due to the failure and shortcomings of the penal code in force, and in particular articles 340 and 98. We also affirm that the Centre is following this matter closely with all official and unofficial bodies in order to take all the legal steps necessary to implement the decree and the presidential decision. We also appeal to the President and the Legislative Council to work on amending many of the legal provisions that are unjust towards women and on issuing laws dedicated to protecting women from violence. Accordingly, we at the Palestinian Center congratulate all Palestinian women and the organisations active in the field of women's rights on this fair and effective decision, which can be regarded as a turning point in history that can be built upon to increase pressure on decision-makers in order to suspend and amend all the laws and procedures that are unjust to women's rights and that discriminate against them.
