The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution organised a mass march that went through the streets of Gaza at midday today, 11\/5\/2011. The march brought together many sections of the Palestinian people, from civil forces to youth gatherings and coalitions, calling for unity in the Palestinian ranks and for the implementation of the agreements concluded in Egypt among all the factions to be guaranteed. In an address, Mr. Saeed Al-Muqadama of the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution confirmed that this step came out of a sense of responsibility and concern for the national interest, and as a continuation of the efforts the Centre has been making since November 2007. Mr. Al-Muqadama also called on all sections of the Palestinian people to stand every Wednesday to monitor the parties' implementation of the agreement and to ensure there is no obstruction or delay, in addition to supporting the efforts of the sincere for a faithful implementation of the reconciliation agreement. He went on to say that this agreement is the property of the Palestinian people and that we will not allow it to be tampered with and to return us to square one, namely the division. In another context, Mr. Alaa Hamouda, spokesman of the coalition of civil forces to safeguard the agreement, said that they are aware of the scale of the challenges awaiting them and that the practical implementation of the agreement's clauses requires sincerity of intention and a free national will, in addition to clear working mechanisms that address the details of every file of the division. Mr. Hamouda called on both the Hamas and Fatah movements to respect their undertakings and to abide by implementing the reconciliation agreement, and on the need to spread a culture of tolerance and forgiveness among the Palestinian people at large and to affirm the role of reconciliation figures in strengthening national reconciliation. He also stressed the need for the immediate release of all political detainees and an end to campaigns of incitement and arrest, in addition to respect for freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly as a right guaranteed by the Basic Law. Mr. Hamouda also warned against any external pressure or blackmail that would return the parties to the square of division, and said the coalition will continue to ensure the agreements are implemented for the sake of Palestine and the people as a whole.
