Nablus, the road safety awareness project: among the projects the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution offers for women and children, the Centre carries out the road safety awareness project in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport and the Supreme Traffic Council in Nablus. The project aims at increasing the road safety culture of drivers, whether of public or private vehicles, and it also targets school pupils, particularly third grade primary pupils, to increase awareness and understanding of road safety. Since the project began on 15\/9\/2010 the Centre has worked on selecting a group of university graduates, men and women, to carry out the workshop stage. And so that the education would not be based on these graduates' own guesswork or assumptions, the Palestinian Center held a training course covering two subjects related to road safety, namely: \u2022 Training the graduates in presentation and facilitation skills while running the workshop, increasing their experience and skills and the means and methods an educator or trainer uses while running a workshop before third grade primary pupils. \u2022 Giving them information and knowledge relating to road safety so that the educator has sufficient understanding of this subject, and helping them in how to convey the correct information. A day was also set aside for practical application. Training material on road safety was also distributed, containing subjects and video films suited to or addressing the age level of third grade primary pupils. Its most important subjects were: 1. Using safety devices in the car. 2. The importance of fastening the seat belt and its main benefits. 3. The steps for crossing the road safely. 4. The importance of using traffic signs and lights to cross the road, such as the pedestrian crossing, and knowing the colours of traffic lights and what each colour means. 5. The bicycle and the correct and safe ways of riding it. During the period from 5\/12\/2010 to 24\/2\/2011, more than 50 schools were reached in five governorates, namely Nablus, Tulkarm, Jericho, Jenin and Hebron, where around 1,250 pupils were reached. Speaking about such projects and the benefit they achieve, the project director, Mr. Ahmed Abu Ayyash, spoke about how much a road safety culture needs to be provided and strengthened, particularly as there are daily accidents with victims, which sadly are either the result of the driver's recklessness and driving above the permitted speed, or of the child's inattention and misjudgement of the distance in which he must cross the road and be safe and away from the cars. It was therefore essential for the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, as a civil society organisation, to have a role in strengthening a road safety culture. In the same vein, the project coordinator, Issam Odeh, added that the Palestinian Center has a great desire to reach more governorates, more schools and more varied groups, but that it focused on a group of schools located in dangerous areas and in urgent and immediate need of such educational workshops. \"We hope that in the near future there will be a project larger and broader than this one so that we can convey the information to a greater number.\"<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
