On Thursday 13\/1 the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution organised a poetry competition on national reconciliation, attended by leaders from the Fatah and Hamas movements and a judging panel of writers and poets from the Palestinian Writers' Union, with a large number of academics and interested young people present. This event comes within the Centre's activities in strengthening civil peace and national reconciliation, in the framework of the popular campaign for national reconciliation launched by the Palestinian Center at the end of 2007. This evening came as a youth initiative to strengthen civil peace, carried out by the Centre with funding from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in its efforts to root and strengthen the principles of tolerance and dialogue in Palestinian society, particularly after the events of the division. At the start of the evening, Mr. Iyad Abu Hjair, deputy director of the Centre, welcomed those present and Dr. Ismail Radwan, a leader in the Hamas movement, and Dr. Abdullah Abu Samhadana, a leader in the Fatah movement, expressing to them the extent of the anger, reproach and frustration with the leaderships of the two movements at the continuation of this division, which is no longer only political but has become social, economic and psychological. In his address he called on the leaderships of the two movements to respond to the wishes of the public and of citizens and to their appeals and to take them into account more than they respond to the outside and to the demands of Arab presidents and leaders. At the end of his address he expressed the hope that 2011 would be a year for ending the division and for the Palestinian people to regain their unity so that they may be equal to the challenges facing them. In an address representing the Hamas movement, Dr. Ismail Radwan stressed the wish to achieve unity and harmony among all members of the Palestinian people, particularly amid these challenges facing us all and facing the cause, and amid the Judaisation of Jerusalem and the violation of the West Bank, and also amid the continuing threats of aggression against Gaza. He said this confirms that we are in the greatest need of the choice of unity and reconciliation. \"We do not say this for media positioning; it is an authentic choice for the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas and a strategic choice. But the choice of unity rests on the foundations of full political and security partnership among the various Palestinian groups, on not submitting to American dictates, and on an end to the pursuit of resistance fighters among the people and to security coordination.\" He added that unity must be on the basis of the national constants and with the choice of resistance within a national consensus to preserve the internal front, and that this requires a halt to security cooperation with the occupation, an end to the file of political detention and a halt to media incitement. For his part, Dr. Abdullah Abu Samhadana, a leader in the Fatah movement, said that what is required today from the Fatah and Hamas movements is to make concessions to the Palestinian people for the sake of the national project, which the division is battering. He stressed that Fatah and Hamas are among the essential components of the Palestinian people, and that therefore the Hamas movement cannot put an end to the Fatah movement in Gaza, just as the Fatah movement cannot put an end to the Hamas movement in the West Bank, since the Hamas movement is an essential participant in the Palestinian national struggle, while illusions about removing either movement benefit no one. In his address he said that there are those who fight everyone who has carried arms against Israel, and that Fatah was the first spark of the national struggle and the first bullet of the revolution. At the close of his address, Abu Samhadana called on the Hamas movement to sign the Egyptian paper, which, as he said, is a Palestinian paper produced through the work of the committees, with Mr. Khaled Meshaal having put the final touches to the Egyptian paper. Dr. Ismail Radwan responded to this by saying that the paper reached by the dialogue committees in Cairo is not the paper the Hamas movement was asked to sign, and that they had conveyed this position of theirs to all the parties for the sake of precision and objectivity. The poems of the competing young people were then recited in the presence of the judging panel of poets and writers, and the competitors came in the following order: 1.
