The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution took part in the closing conference of the project \"Combating violence against women\" carried out by Nuseirat preparatory girls' school \"A\" in the Happy Land Center hall on the fourth of May this year.<\/p>\n
The conference was attended by Mr. Ali Al-Majdalawi, director of the education area, Mrs. Muzayyan Shukr, the school principal, Mr. Ziad Abu Al-Hajj, judge of the sharia court in Deir Al-Balah, and for the Centre lawyer Younis Al-Tahrawi and Mrs. Raeda Wishah, specialist at the Centre, in addition to a gathering of those present.<\/p>\n
For his part, the director of the education area spoke about the phenomenon of violence against women, which he considered an old phenomenon present in all societies, and that Islam came with rulings to preserve the woman. He also expressed his readiness to cooperate with the Centre after learning of the team's work and the statistics presented by the Centre on the phenomenon of violence against women.<\/p>\n
In another context, Mr. Abu Al-Hajj said that Islam worked to honour the woman and to give her her rights in full, such as the right to blood money like the man.<\/p>\n
In his speech, Mr. Al-Tahrawi confirmed that confronting this phenomenon needs the effort of many official and unofficial organisations, and also needs a long time to change people's point of view on the issue of violence.<\/p>\n
Al-Tahrawi also addressed two problems, the first of them the problem of legal violence such as the duality of laws, particularly as Palestine has been subject to much occupation across the ages, which has affected the difference in laws from time to time. The second problem is the values, concepts and points of view of Palestinian society, which at times form a great obstacle. He stressed the need to hold to the teachings of the Islamic religion and to give up some negative values in society.<\/p>\n
Those present produced a set of recommendations, namely:
\n1. The need to unify the efforts of civil, official and religious organisations to confront the phenomenon of violence against women.
\n2. Pressing the legislative side to unify the laws and abolish the contravening laws.
\n3. Holding workshops to eliminate the phenomenon.<\/p>\n
