\"Do not dream of working. It is enough that we educated you, and may God reward us.\" This is a phrase a university student quoted from her family at one of the workshops held by the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution at the Nama College of Science and Technology, which brought together various disciplines on the twenty-seventh of this month, within the events of the project for supporting and empowering women victims of violence funded by Norwegian People's Aid. The workshop was\u2026<\/p>\n
The workshop carried the title \"The importance of family dialogue within the Palestinian family\", and many strands were discussed, such as the girl's role and her participation in the family's decisions, the family's view of the girl's education and respect for her mind, and discrimination between the girl and the young man.<\/p>\n
The meeting also included views supporting and others opposing the importance of dialogue among the members of the family, and many of the parents' points of view were presented about the importance of education for the girl. Some of them mentioned the importance of education as the weapon with which she fights what the days conceal, and some of them said that educating the girl is a way of increasing her dower and her chance of marriage and so that she may be called \"educated\" and nothing more.<\/p>\n
On another side, some of the girls mentioned that there are parents who prefer the continuation of the education of the young men over the girls when there is more than one young man and girl in one family, and some families consider that the girl's mind is deficient, so they prefer to marginalise their views in taking decisions specific to the family.<\/p>\n
In conclusion, the meeting produced a series of recommendations as follows:<\/p>\n
1. Encouraging the girl to engage in dialogue and to defend her point of view.
\n2. Affirming the importance of dialogue in solving family problems.
