Dr. Hassan Al-Joujou, head of the Supreme Sharia Judicial Council in Gaza City, stressed the importance of the family meeting point in easing children's suffering and of designating a place for children's visits instead of police stations, with the negative psychological effects they cause for the children being visited.
\nHis remarks came on the margins of a workshop organised by the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution after the opening of the first specialised family meeting point in the Gaza Strip, to specifications ensuring the best means of comfort for children and families. Taking part in the meeting point's opening ceremony were the judges of the sharia courts of appeal, Sheikh Saeed Abu Al-Jibeen and Sheikh Mohammed Al-Agha, Reem Al-Wehaidi, projects officer at the Norwegian People's Aid office (NPA), the body supporting the development and equipping of the meeting point, Lieutenant Colonel Iyad Hourani, representing the police, and a group of enforcement directors from police stations, in addition to the Centre's staff.
\nAl-Joujou praised the Palestinian Center's role, stressing that it was first and a pioneer in the idea of the meeting point as a contribution to easing the effects on children of separation between spouses.
\nFor his part, Mr. Saeed Al-Muqadama, director of the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, welcomed those present and valued their visit to the Palestinian Center. Al-Muqadama reviewed the Centre's course over the past years, from its founding to its programmes and activities, including the establishment of the family meeting point, and said that the aim of the meeting point is to create a suitable psychological atmosphere for children and to help them see their separated parents, and that it may be a good initiative to help reunite some separated families.
\nDuring the visit, Dr. Al-Joujou praised the Centre's programmes and its efforts in the field of the family meeting point, which works to help separated parents see their children.
\nThe head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Dr. Al-Joujou, called on the Palestinian Center to open branches of the family meeting point in northern Gaza so that all the governorates of the Gaza Strip may be covered, noting the need for this branch since the Centre's branches are spread across Rafah, Khan Younis, the Middle governorate and Gaza.
\nIn the same vein, Lieutenant Colonel Iyad Al-Hourani gave an address explaining that they in the police are among those who call for such a meeting point to exist and that they are ready to cooperate in this regard, so that there may be coordination between the Centre and the police to facilitate the visitation process should one of the parties to the dispute among the family refuse to give the other party the opportunity to see the children.
\nHe also confirmed that the proportion of visits at police stations has fallen thanks to the existence of the family meeting point, valuing the Centre's role in this.
\nAt the end of the visit there were several interventions and questions from those present among the Centre's members and the police officers about the matter of visits and the designation of the family meeting point for this, which Dr. Al-Joujou answered by confirming that the Supreme Judicial Council is studying a decision that will answer all the questions of those working in the field and will work to guarantee the rights of all parties, foremost among them children, since the decision will address several important matters that will make the process run better.
\nHe also confirmed that the decision will come after consultations with the judicial bodies in Gaza and the community organisations concerned with the subject.
\nFor his part, Abdel Moneim Al-Tahrawi, coordinator of the project for supporting and empowering abused women, confirmed that the opening of this meeting point, which is considered the first of its kind in Gaza in terms of privacy, comes within the series of activities of the project funded by the Norwegian People's Aid office (NPA), which aims at providing many social, psychological and legal services to the Palestinian family in all its components.
