Khan Younis, Monday 7\/12\/2009: the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, with the participation of Al-Aqsa University in Khan Younis, held a workshop within the events of the sixteen days and to mark the international day for combating violence against women.
\nTaking part in the workshop was Dr. Najah Al-Sumeiri, professor of sociology and acting dean of student affairs, who spoke about family violence from an academic point of view. She addressed the spread of violence in societies and the heavy price humanity has paid for this violence, and that the most exposed to violence are women and children, and that what drives this violence in our Palestinian society is the control of customs and traditions, cultural and intellectual backwardness, and the weakness of women's role and of their claiming their rights.
\nRepresenting the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution was Mr. Abdel Moneim Al-Tahrawi in his capacity as the Centre's projects coordinator, who addressed the Centre's role in limiting the phenomenon of violence against women and the Centre's successes in this field, presenting a statistic reaching 1,613 cases this year. He addressed the mechanisms of intervention in handling cases and addressed the negative circumstances, political and economic, that have led to the rise in the rate of violence in our Palestinian society, and also spoke about the phenomenon of killing on the grounds of honour. Dr. Fayez Abu Amra, professor of Islamic law at the university, also took part and addressed the role of the Islamic religion and its honouring of women and its preserving their full rights and acquainting them with their duties. He addressed the quality of guardianship in men through the law, while setting out and explaining the ways of treating marital problems within the home, and explaining the ways religion has prescribed for disciplining a wife, clarifying the gracious and easy concepts of religion in a simple way, far from fanaticism and the absence of a correct understanding of sharia. The discussion was run by the social counsellor working at the Centre, Mr. Samir Al-Muqadama, who moved on to dialogue with the female students taking part in the workshop, numbering 50 students from the specialisations of psychology, sociology, Islamic studies and the humanities. The number of interventions from the students reached 15, which enriched the discussion with good and correct information on the subject. The workshop also produced many recommendations, the most important of them being:
\n1. The need for communication between the relevant organisations and specialist university students.
