The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, in partnership with the NGO Network and with funding from Norwegian People's Aid, broadcast a radio programme on Tariq Al-Mahabba Radio in Nablus to combat violence against women. Taking part were Ms. Nisreen Zalmout, the campaign's journalist, Mrs. Rawda Basir, director of the Centre for Women's Studies, and Mrs. Mervat Al-Salous, specialist at the Family Defence Association.
\nThe programme was entitled \"Violence as a global phenomenon\".<\/p>\n
Mrs. Mervat began by defining violence, and the discussion covered the causes leading to violence from the economic, social and environmental angles. Mrs. Rawda added that there are statistics indicating the existence of killing on the grounds of honour, and this figure was 48 cases of killing between 2004 and 2006, and among them were a woman of 75 and a girl of 12 who were killed on the pretext of defending honour. There are also many studies carried out by the Centre for Women's Studies to show the rate of assaults that are not reported. Mrs. Rawda also spoke about the laws that are unjust to women, particularly maintenance, where the law does not do a woman justice in obtaining her right, and for this reason a woman is forced to give up her right if she wants a divorce. Mrs. Mervat said that the family has a great role in the upbringing a woman receives at home in terms of the discrimination that still exists between the boy and the girl, since our society is a male society, and all this leads to a weakness in a woman's character.<\/p>\n
Dana, the programme's presenter, also asked about the reasons that make a woman endure violence at home, and Mrs. Rawda answered that the bad economic situation the family lives in and a woman's fear of not finding a provider for herself and her children is what makes her endure all this violence.
