Nablus.Wurud Yassin<\/b> The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution held two workshops in the governorates of Tulkarm and Salfit, within the series of workshops of the project of the national campaign to combat violence against women, which it carries out in partnership with the Palestinian NGO Network and with funding from Norwegian People's Aid, focusing on cases of killing on the grounds of family honour.
\nThe two workshops were attended by many representatives of local community organisations, women's frameworks and specialised lawyers. The two workshops focused on the three dimensions, social, religious and legal, of the reality and the problem of violence against women in Palestine.
\nThose present at the two workshops focused on the existence of gaps in the application of the law, specifically the personal status law, where lawyer Dareen Saleh from Tulkarm called for the application of the amended personal status law, adding: \"The problem is in our own reading and our interpretation of its Qur'anic verses\", and focusing on the subject of inheritance. Mrs. Asmaa Hijab, deputy prosecutor for personal status in Salfit governorate, added: \"Women who have been subjected to violence, whether by beating or other forms, come to the court every day.\"
\nThose present in the two governorates focused on the fact that upbringing inside the home plays an essential role in change, and that the man lives by the woman's culture, and if we want to spread awareness we must start from the first nucleus of society, which is the father and the mother. Those present added that religion is clear and explicit, but because societies have moved away from applying it they fell prey to western ideas, adding to that that religion gave the woman her right and did her justice.
\nThe participants in these workshops produced the following recommendations:
\n- Applying the family protection law so that the husband is not allowed to marry without the knowledge of the first wife.
\n- Raising the age of marriage to 18 years.
\n- Working on strengthening the woman's role in society through spreading awareness and intensive workshops.
\n- Collective work between organisations in order to make the campaign to combat violence against women a success. Linking sharia law with civil law.
\n- Cooperating on spreading awareness and sex education jointly between the Ministry of Education and the local community organisations.
