\nPalestinian women still need a great deal of support and empowerment
\nHebron: during a workshop to combat violence against women held by the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution and the Palestinian NGO Network on the phenomenon of violence in Palestinian society, in Aqbat Jabr camp in the city of Jericho, the participants praised the importance of such workshops that assess the phenomenon of violence against women, and welcomed the initiative of the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution and the NGO Network.
\nAfter the project coordinator in the Hebron area, Nour Jaber, gave a full presentation introducing the project and the Palestinian Center's services, the workshop began its work with a definition of the phenomenon of violence against women. During the workshop a set of statistics was presented supporting the assumption that the phenomenon of violence against women is continuously increasing and that it is a global phenomenon, though the rates differ from one area to another.
\nThe participants in the workshop also presented some stories representing violations of their rights by husbands and relatives, which enriched the subject of discussion and gave it a practical rather than a theoretical character.
\nIn the midst of the discussion within the workshop, the participants recommended the need to set up centres concerned with the issues the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution is concerned with, such as finding alternative places for children of separated families to be seen, instead of visits at the court or in the homes of neutral parties.
\nThey also stressed the need to increase women's awareness and education programmes on the subjects of violence and on subjects concerning their rights and duties, and also stressed the existence of a gap between law and religion on the one hand and their application on the other, along with the need to deal firmly with killings on the grounds of honour by raising the years of punishment imposed on those who commit them.
\nTo demonstrate the existence of a gap between law and practice, the women say that the age of marriage for a girl is 18, but despite the existence of this law there is no application of it. They recommended the need to improve the state of the laws concerning women and to improve the khula law so that a woman may separate from her husband easily. The participants also recommended the need to reach the marginalised groups in society.
\nThe participants also recommended the need to find alternatives to what is called the clan solution, since in many of the stories that have occurred, a woman goes to one of the known families under the name of \"dakhila\" (seeking protection) and her fate there is killing, and the matter is not resolved as expected.
