Palestinian society and setting a mechanism on which all the relevant organisations may unite in order to set out the appropriate solutions to limit this phenomenon, which has come to threaten the social fabric.
They called for holding more seminars and lectures targeting all the segments of society alike in order to spread awareness among everyone, given that violence has been adopted as a way of life in their dealings with others, particularly with women.
They also called for providing psychological support to the woman subjected to violence, noting that violence has become a phenomenon, where the studies indicate that one in every five women in the Gaza Strip is subjected to one of the various forms of violence.
The participants recommended the need to adopt combating violence as a curriculum taught at the various school stages, given its importance in strengthening positive behaviour in dealing with others, particularly the weakest link, which is the woman.
They called for setting out an effective vision and plans in order to confront violence, and for all the relevant civil and government organisations to unite.
The participants agreed on the need for networking and coordination in order to protect Palestinian women from the violence inflicted on them, particularly community violence, calling on decision-makers to settle the legal environment instead of the fragmentation it is in.
The workshop, which carried the title "The mechanism for combating violence against women", was organised by the Palestinian NGO Network and the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution at the premises of the Al-Majd Association in the Middle governorate.
The workshop was attended by Amal Siyam from the Women's Affairs Centre, Hossam Ahmed, coordinator of the project of the campaign to combat violence against women funded by Norwegian People's Aid, the project adviser Dunia Al-Amal Ismail, and many representatives of the relevant organisations.
The workshop began with a welcoming speech by the project coordinator, noting that "the project to combat violence against women" is carried out by the Palestinian NGO Network and the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution in both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
He noted that the campaign aims at mobilising Palestinian public opinion and pressing decision-makers to work on protecting women and combating all forms of violence against them, particularly killing on the grounds of honour, by carrying out a national campaign with the participation of academic, religious and legal figures, members of the Legislative Council and representatives of civil organisations in workshops on the issues of violence against women, and offering the recommendations needed to draft the national document on combating violence against women.
The trainer Amal Siyam gave a detailed explanation of the concept of violence, stressing that it has become a phenomenon that troubles Palestinian society.
Siyam touched on the causes that led to the spread of the phenomenon of violence, namely the wrong value-based view, which does not see a real and complete capacity in the woman as a human being, and that this is what lays the foundation for a life built on marginalising the woman; general cultural backwardness and the ignorance it produces of the components of civilisation and human development, which must rise on the shoulders of woman and man alike within the equation of complementarity between them to make a purposeful and advanced life.
She noted that among the causes that also aggravate the phenomenon is the bad use of authority, whether inside the family or the social class, since it is built on arrogance and on crushing the rights of the weaker inside these social frameworks, in addition to the guardianship of wrong social customs and traditions that prevent the growth of the woman's role and her creativity in enriching life with the elements of renaissance, and the weakness of the woman herself in claiming her human and national rights and in working to activate and grow her social, political and economic role.
She pointed to the forms of violence, namely sexual, physical, verbal and other violence, noting that violence against women has become a universal phenomenon suffered by all the women of the world alike, even though its severity differs from one country to another.
Siyam confirmed that the practice of violence against women in Palestine is a phenomenon that is increasing day after day, particularly as 20% of women are subjected to violence, saying: "The time has come for society to wake up, because the phenomenon of violence has invaded every home and has left no door unknocked, and knocked hard, to strike the members of its family, particularly women."
For her part, the campaign's adviser Ismail said: "Reading violence against women today requires of us a new vision that involves demolishing many structures and building new ones that champion the values of the age and genuinely take into account the particularity of the reality we live in, without overlooking the changes and transformations that have affected the women's cause as a whole in its dialectical entanglement with the national cause and the social dimension."

It is worth noting that the campaign to combat violence against women in the Palestinian areas, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, follows closely the growth of the phenomenon of violence against women, whose pace keeps rising.
The campaign seeks to strengthen the combating of violence against Palestinian women, who suffer violence that increases every moment until it has become a real phenomenon confirmed by a body of research studies, which confirmed that one in every four women in Gaza suffers from the violence practised against her.

غزة/العلاقات العامة
