Women bear the greater suffering and are principal victims of these repressive measures, which lead to more suffering for Palestinian families and thus cause the rate of social violence to rise.

- The continuing siege of the Gaza Strip, which has caused much suffering for women and their children, particularly those who are ill, as a result of their inability to receive the necessary treatment abroad, which has taken the lives of many women.

- The deterioration of the psychological condition of many women as a result of the death of their children and husbands, whether as a result of the aggressive Israeli military operations against the population in the Gaza Strip or as a result of the death of

- dozens of those working in the tunnels on the border with Egypt because of the siege and the difficult economic conditions.

- The inability of the institutions of the international community and the United Nations to issue firm resolutions against Israel to compel it to implement the United Nations resolutions concerning the Palestinian people, in particular resolutions 1325 and 1889 on the protection of women in times of war and crisis.

- The violence resulting from the absence of a decent life for many women whose homes were destroyed during the war and whose families remain without shelter to this day.

- The continuing division and its negative effects on women, whether at the social, psychological or economic level or in relation to freedoms, and the neglect of developing the laws that limit violence against women because of the absence of Palestinian legislation on matters relating to women's needs.

Accordingly, we in the Amal Coalition can only declare the following:

- Our adherence to our principled position on the necessity of ending the occupation and the unjust siege against our people, on the path to establishing their independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

- Real and serious work to end the Palestinian division immediately and without delay, given the suffering this hateful division causes for every component of the Palestinian people.

- Calling on the government and the Palestinian Legislative Council to take a clear position on adopting laws and legislation that protect women and criminalise every form of violence inflicted on them in the family and in society, and to take firm measures to protect women from violence and prevent it.

- Obliging the ruling executive authority to apply the international conventions and laws on combating violence against women.

- Strengthening the role of the Palestinian media in developing a discourse that rejects the violence inflicted on women.

- Strengthening a human rights discourse built on equality and justice and rejecting every form of violence against women, by including material that affirms human rights, and in particular women's rights, in the Palestinian school curriculum.

- Increasing the contribution of the political forces, parties and movements, as well as of intellectuals and educators, to strengthening a discourse opposed to every form of discrimination and violence against women and calling for equality and social justice, starting from the principle that women's rights are human rights.

- Employing cultural and educational activities and events in the local community in order to improve the level of respect for human principles and rights in general and women's rights in particular, on the path to building a democratic society that respects all its components.

- Providing psychological and legal support to women victims of violence.

- Activating women's participation in building a culture of civil peace and the rejection of violence, since this condition cannot be met without realistically achieving women's effective participation in every field of community work.

We in the Amal Coalition, in the context of this occasion, strongly condemn the inhumane practices to which Palestinian women are subjected because of Israel's continuing violation of all the international conventions and laws relating to human rights in general and women's rights in particular. We call on the international community and its international and regional organisations, and particularly international human rights organisations, to stand firmly against the Israeli violations against our Palestinian people and to protect Palestinian women from every form of violation of the rights granted to them by the international conventions and laws, in particular Security Council resolution 1325, which addresses women's rights in times of war and conflict. We also affirm that the continuing siege and occupation have hindered the opportunities for development and progress for the Palestinian people, increasing their suffering in general and raising

the rate of violence and discrimination practised against women in particular, which requires serious international action to end the siege and the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967.

In conclusion, we in the Amal Coalition to Combat Violence against Women call on everyone to take part in the varied events of the campaign organised by the organisations participating in the coalition and running until 10 December, through cultural activities, seminars, media programmes and festivals that shed light on women's issues, their aspirations and their just demands.

Let us all work to build a civilised and advanced Palestinian society that draws its strength from the strength of all its citizens, men and women alike.

[3

post-3798","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
["GET
