Nor do we overlook that all Arab citizens are affected by, and indeed subject to, mutual media influences. On the international day for combating violence against women, we raise the question of how far the Palestinian media can help lift the cover from the violence inflicted on Palestinian women, which feeds on and benefits from the state of chaos, lawlessness and the absence of law.
Given the particularity of Palestinian women's situation and their militant standing in society, the Palestinian media face the problem of the violence practised against them with ambivalence and evident bashfulness. The important and celebrated role Palestinian women played in resisting the occupation clothed them in a sanctified mould and made them a model of the woman who is often placed in an imaginary mould far from reality, and makes raising her social problems a blemish on the pure militant frame she has been placed in. Therefore we find the Arab media often placing her within a symbolic mould, while the Palestinian media are not unified towards her and deal with women either through the traditional intellectual dimension, consciously and in harmony with their intellectual system and points of reference, which includes those with a romantic view of the image, ignoring and obscuring women's legal and rights-based entitlement as a sector sharing the burdens of the national struggle and skipping over their real social problems, proceeding from a vision and doctrinal solutions to society's social issues for this media orientation. Its proponents therefore prefer to present the militant half of the picture. As for the other media orientation, which does not escape the problem of women's dual reality, standing as they do amid the occupation's oppression and repression while confronting the prevailing cultural system, it conveys the picture with an unsteady eye and deals with it without a clear approach and without consistency. It does not resolve the general realistic scene of the Palestinian woman as an ordinary woman standing at the focal point of contradiction, contenting itself with reporting what the organisations present in their reports on her social problems, among them the violence practised against her, or covering her events with evident neutrality. As a result the two media orientations meet in confining the media image of women to showing the militant and humanitarian dimension of the women's scene. In my view the media hesitation of the enlightened orientation, which believes in women's rights and equality and in lifting the cover from their problems, goes back to methodological causes relating to an old struggle over the practical embodiment of the concept of Palestinian priorities, which has turned into an approach based on setting national and social issues against one another, so that her image in the face of her social problems and her image as a victim of local violence come to stand opposite and even to blur her image as a symbol and model of the struggle against the occupation. The problem also goes back to hypocrisy towards the general cultural structure in Palestinian society, whether out of inability or out of going along with it, a structure that is reluctant to acknowledge the existence of the problem of violence against women in principle or that minimises its scale, particularly regarding sexual violence. Therefore the discussion is often pushed into the realm of settling the term over whether it is a phenomenon or a passing problem over which no fuss should be made and no storms stirred in women's teacups; and sometimes the subject is smuggled away and muzzled by jumping to accusing the women's organisations that take up the issues of violence against women of going along with the Western agenda.
I do not rush to burden the media with more than it can bear in the complex Palestinian situation, for the media's function is to convey reality. But I call on it to break the barrier of silence as we call on the victims to do so, for women's issues, their equality and the lifting of local violence from them must be within the context of a general, adopted national plan based on a strategy of comprehensive change in women's reality at the level of education, work, law and the media alike.

[3

post-3863","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
["GET
