This is what the general coordinator of the project \"Protecting children from sexual exploitation\", Najat Al-Jubairi, said during a meeting that brought together a select group of teachers, lawyers and reconciliation figures in the Centre's hall on Tuesday 31\/5\/2011.
\nMrs. Al-Jubairi stressed that the project's aim is to spread awareness among the ranks of Palestinian society to protect them from falling into or being exposed to such cases, particularly after their spread in the neighbouring Arab countries to varying degrees. She also mentioned that the rate of occurrence of these cases in our Palestinian society is very low, but the need to raise society's awareness has become pressing, since prevention is better than cure.
\nOne of the women present mentioned that most families one of whose children may be exposed to such cases prefer secrecy and confidentiality in dealing with the matter in the courts, and so the hearings are held behind closed doors and in complete confidentiality, with only the public prosecution, the opposing lawyer, the judges, the perpetrator and the victim present.
\nOne of those present also mentioned that punishment and imprisonment for perpetrators is not the ideal solution in some cases, since the perpetrators are sick and we must treat them like any other patient, alongside punishment.
\nAt the end of the meeting, those present produced the following series of recommendations:
\n1. The need to spread sound sexual education for children.
\n2. Reducing some of the bad habits practised in society, such as excessive kissing and hugging.
\n3. The need for the government to carry out its role, as well as for civil and community organisations, in spreading awareness among people.
