Burn, candles, and light the darkness of our long night, the darkness of siege, division and ignorance, but please do not burn our own children!<\/span><\/h5>\n
The questions and exclamations keep mounting among the people of Gaza, who have been living in darkness for more than eight years. The power-cut crisis has left behind it a disaster known as \"the candle children\": the child victims who die by burning or suffocation because candles are lit for light instead of the electricity that a Gaza home does not see for more than eight hours a day at best.<\/span><\/h5>\n
On the evening of Friday 6 May, Mohammed Abu Hindi, a resident of Shati camp west of Gaza, did not know that he and his children would be the newest victims of a fire caused by a candle lit by the mother in the children's room for light. It was not the first such incident: a similar scene had already taken the lives of two children of the Al-Hbeil family, and another claimed the entire Duheir family when a fire broke out in their home and killed six, the father, the mother and four children, the eldest of them no more than six years old.<\/span><\/h5>\n
\u00a0Yusra (three years old), Rahaf (two) and Tamer (two months), all children of Mohammed Abu Hindi, burned to death in the cruellest scene the Gaza street has witnessed since the start of this year, when a fire broke out in their home at night and consumed everything in its path, including the bodies of the three children. The story began when the mother placed a candle on a plastic object to light for her children the darkness of the basement the family lives in, not knowing it would be their last supper. The flames took hold first in the children's room, killing three, injuring another and leaving one child unharmed, while others suffered smoke inhalation.<\/span><\/h5>\n
More than 25 people, most of them children, have died by burning or suffocation over the past five years because of the electricity supply crisis in the Gaza Strip. Each time an incident of this kind occurs, the street stirs in anger, calling for an end to the worsening electricity crisis and for this file to be kept clear of the internal political division. In this context the question arises: will the incident of the three children of the Abu Hindi family be the last? Or does Gaza have an appointment with more charred bodies?<\/span><\/h5>\n
And are there temporary alternatives that could be put in place to help bring the electricity crisis under control, instead of the trading of accusations between the parties to the crisis and the electricity distribution company?<\/span><\/h5>\n
The death by burning of the three children and the injury of others, among them their brother, has brought the electricity crisis file forcefully back to a Gaza street that now lacks the most basic essentials of life, under a tightened siege that intensified after the assault of June 2014, and a political division that has gone on so long that it shortens the lives of Gazans and their children with the sheer weight of problems and crises.<\/span><\/h5>\n
And when Mr. Haniyeh, wearing his white cap, holds the Israeli occupation and the Ramallah government responsible in his Friday sermon for the burning of the children, might Mr. Haniyeh ask himself whether he bears any part of the responsibility for their burning? Or did the smoke of their bodies never reach the white of his robe, or even his cap?<\/span><\/h5>\n
And when we hear that Mr. Abbas refuses to supply the cursed power station with gas bought from the occupation, and when he insists on the excise tax in order to supply this wretched station with industrial diesel, has Mr. Abbas truly asked himself whether any part of his people in Gaza matters to him? Or does he share his late friend Rabin's wish that the sea would swallow it up?<\/span><\/h5>\n
Let Mr. Abbas come forward and give us a convincing answer, or are the people of Gaza the black sheep of the family?<\/span><\/h5>\n
And where were your tears, Mr. Hamdallah, when you visited Gaza? Or have those tears hardened and dried until your eyes can no longer see the truth, so that you bestow on the victims, may you live long, ten thousand shekels and a medical referral?<\/span><\/h5>\n
\u00a0We at the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution express our deep indignation at the loss of child victims because of the shortage of electricity. We regard the continuing power-cut crisis as extremely grave, and we stress that the continuation of the political division will bring more suffering and more child victims, and will further lower the level of services provided to a citizen who is already deprived of many of the basic rights that allow survival and growth.<\/span><\/h5>\n
