Statistics indicate that 1.5% of children in the Palestinian territories were children with disabilities in 2011: 1.6% in the West Bank and 1.4% in the Gaza Strip. As for the distribution of disability by sex, 1.8% of boys are children with disabilities compared with 1.3% of girls.<\/h5>\n<h5>Despite the significance of those figures, these groups have not received full support and backing in the way other groups of children have. They are regarded as marginalised and are not on the list of priorities for many local community programmes, and they have come to suffer clear marginalisation and an abdication of responsibility by those working in the field.<\/h5>\n<h5>The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution, in partnership with Save the Children, therefore launched a project unique of its kind, \"Improving access to protection and health services for children with disabilities in the Gaza Strip\", within the child protection programme. The project targets six areas across the Strip that are considered among the most vulnerable.<\/h5>\n<h5>The project's aim rests on providing various types of services and care to children with disabilities in a mainstream environment, contributing to improved psychological resilience among children and their families in the target areas and meeting their needs, particularly those affected by psychosocial violence in the Gaza Strip. The purpose is to strengthen active participation, development and inclusion for this group, to give children with disabilities the chance to engage in ordinary life, and to give other children the chance to get to know children with disabilities closely, appreciate their difficulties and help them meet life's demands.<\/h5>\n<h5>This requires moving quickly to apply the philosophy of inclusion in society, together with creating suitable conditions for people with disabilities, that is, including children with disabilities in mainstream classes. A society's acceptance of inclusion means its acceptance of difference, which makes it one of the most important and noblest moral and social values, one that must be emphasised. Yet the obstacle to achieving inclusion remains ignorance and the mistaken beliefs raised against the participation of people with disabilities in social and working life by those holding wrong ideas who consider them less productive than people without disabilities.
