The Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution has completed the first training programme on \"Developing young people's skills in social accountability and lobbying and advocacy campaigns\"<\/strong>“<\/strong> for 25 young men and women, within the project A Step Towards Change <\/strong>implemented by the Centre in partnership with the Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) office. This programme is the first phase of the project, which aims to form a national youth coalition active in community and political work to claim their rights to freedom of expression and association. The programme covers several Palestinian cities, including Gaza, Nablus and Hebron. The main topics covered were: social accountability, democracy and citizenship, community participation, the law on forming associations, and lobbying and advocacy, delivered by a group of trainers in all the areas covered by the training.<\/h5>\n
Raed Al-Attal, one of the participants in the training programme, said it was an effective step towards integrating young activists into community work, as well as giving them many new and useful concepts and experiences with a distinguished group of trainers. Another participant, Enas Abu Dalal, added that going through this experience helps deepen gender-based concepts.<\/h5>\n
For his part, Mr. Abdel Moneim Al-Tahrawi, project coordinator, stressed that the project's idea is based on creating a youth coordinating body across the governorates that forms the nucleus of youth work based on the concept of citizenship and helps strengthen social accountability, in order to ensure broader youth participation in the future political process.<\/h5>\n
Trainer Wael Baalousha spoke about the importance of social accountability, one of the programme's topics, noting that dialogue-based social accountability opens new horizons for citizens regarding the questions on their minds. Moreover, social accountability narrows the gap between officials and citizens and improves officials' responsiveness. If we want to succeed, we must develop this approach, which helps restore citizens' confidence as effective members contributing to society in order to improve conditions.<\/h5>\n
Ms. Samar Hamad, lobbying and advocacy campaigns consultant, spoke about the programme, which comprised 25 training hours over five consecutive days for 25 young men and women in the youth coalition, and about the main activities carried out in the previous period, culminating in the election of seven representatives to the coalition's coordinating committee.<\/h5>\n
