A hearing session on the role of the Rafah municipality in providing its services to the public, within the social accountability activities carried out by the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution<\/span>

On Tuesday 22 November 2016 the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Conflict Resolution held a hearing session on the role of the Rafah municipality in providing its services to the public, within the activities of the project \"An advanced step towards social accountability\", held at the premises of the Palestinian Women's Union, attended by a group of the city of Rafah's citizens, representatives of civil society organisations andthose interested in this field, to follow up the municipality's role in providing services to the public.
\nTaking part in the session were Eng. Firas Abu Nuqaira, director of the sewage and rainwater department and acting director of the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility, Eng. Farid Shaaban, director of the projects department, and the social accountability team represented by the student Abdel Rahman Abu Azzoum.
\nAt the start of the discussion, the director of the sewage and rainwater department spoke about the challenges they face and the achievements the utility has made in the city of Rafah, centring on the existence of 18,000 water subscribers in the city and 14,000 subscribers to the sewage network, and that 85% of the city of Rafah is covered by sewage networks, amid citizens' misuse of water, particularly by farmers, and the consequent worsening of the problem of water reaching citizens.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For his part, Eng. Farid Shaaban, director of the projects department, explained that the utility is moving towards strategic solutions to these problems, and noted the existence of a set of projects to rehabilitate the wastewater treatment plants by upgrading the service in the Khirbet Al-Adas area and the Al-Furqan neighbourhood, so that the desalinated water project in the city of Rafah will cover 6,000 cubic metres instead of three thousand.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the session many recommendations were reached, namely strengthening the culture and changing behaviour in the optimal use of water among citizens; the need to complete sewage networks in the areas so as to cover all parts of Rafah; calling for the drinking water network in the Al-Salam neighbourhood to be renewed; fairness in distributing water to the areas; in addition to presenting the achievements through social media; the existence of a joint emergency room between the municipality and volunteers; and preventing wastewater from mixing with groundwater so that wastewater may be used in irrigation and land reclamation after being recycled, all this while working towards a fundamental solution to the problems facing citizens and actually beginning to carry out the awaited projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
